Patrick Rhone has gone through a time in his life where he had to plan out when he would eat his one meal a day so his two kids could eat three meals. He learned a lot from that experience and it shows in his personality and especially in his writing. With time, light shined down on his life, and he now lives a great life with his young daughter, and loving wife. Patrick Rhone, in recent years was granted the ability to pursue his passion that he had carried since he was a young boy of writing as a profession. Patrick Rhone’s insightfulness into the little things of life have helped many people and has helped him publish several books.

I was very excited when Patrick Rhone agreed to be on Dreamers Podcast because I am a huge fan of his work! I think you can find something in any of his writings, and I encourage everyone to check out his sites. This really is an incredible story of a man who did everything he could for his two sons as a young age, and has been greatly rewarded later in life for his struggles.

yeah well and I appreciate you putting

15
[00:00:45],180 –> [00:00:50],940
up with my ever changing schedule this

16
[00:00:48],300 –> [00:00:56],339
past week or so has just been crazy

17
[00:00:50],940 –> [00:00:58],920
crazy not so busy lots of projects lots

18
[00:00:56],339 –> [00:01:02],159
of changes i’m doing another global

19
[00:00:58],920 –> [00:01:03],659
challenge on friday night so I got it I

20
[00:01:02],159 –> [00:01:06],390
haven’t even started preparing for that

21
[00:01:03],659 –> [00:01:09],689
really so he’ll know that’s not your

22
[00:01:06],390 –> [00:01:12],540
I’ve been preparing for months but but

23
[00:01:09],689 –> [00:01:13],380
the kind of final details sometimes have

24
[00:01:12],540 –> [00:01:16],470
to do yet

25
[00:01:13],380 –> [00:01:19],679
well enough about my life what was the

26
[00:01:16],470 –> [00:01:21],450
whole shows about your legs have and

27
[00:01:19],680 –> [00:01:24],720
gosh that’s pressure

28
[00:01:21],450 –> [00:01:27],000
what is the challenge Oh Dora challenge

29
[00:01:24],720 –> [00:01:32],400
the government challenge is a

30
[00:01:27],000 –> [00:01:35],909
military-style endurance event led by

31
[00:01:32],400 –> [00:01:39],750
excess and current Special Forces

32
[00:01:35],909 –> [00:01:42],180
personnel put on by a company called go

33
[00:01:39],750 –> [00:01:45],659
rock that make a military-grade

34
[00:01:42],180 –> [00:01:48],299
backpacks otherwise known as rucksacks

35
[00:01:45],659 –> [00:01:51],270
and and other equipment and it was

36
[00:01:48],299 –> [00:01:54],330
started by a special forces operator who

37
[00:01:51],270 –> [00:01:57],449
came back from the field not finding in

38
[00:01:54],330 –> [00:01:59],340
equipment that would stand up to the

39
[00:01:57],450 –> [00:02:01],950
unique challenges that Special Forces

40
[00:01:59],340 –> [00:02:04],350
operators go through and so he decided

41
[00:02:01],950 –> [00:02:07],560
to design and build one himself and

42
[00:02:04],350 –> [00:02:09],269
start a company around that the problem

43
[00:02:07],560 –> [00:02:10],890
is of course that this stuff has to get

44
[00:02:09],269 –> [00:02:12],480
tested and there’s a couple ways you can

45
[00:02:10],889 –> [00:02:14],518
test it you can actually give it to your

46
[00:02:12],480 –> [00:02:16],679
to your special forces buddies and they

47
[00:02:14],519 –> [00:02:18],480
can you know have it out in the field

48
[00:02:16],680 –> [00:02:20],159
and stuff like that but actually getting

49
[00:02:18],480 –> [00:02:23],369
that kind of immediate feedback from

50
[00:02:20],159 –> [00:02:28],260
them it’s really difficult and so he

51
[00:02:23],370 –> [00:02:32],909
decided to get a few of his other us SPF

52
[00:02:28],260 –> [00:02:34],679
buddies together SFO and throw on these

53
[00:02:32],909 –> [00:02:35],290
rocks and load them up with heavy stuff

54
[00:02:34],680 –> [00:02:37],840
and

55
[00:02:35],290 –> [00:02:40],390
them through some unique challenges and

56
[00:02:37],840 –> [00:02:42],969
one thing grew to another and now it’s

57
[00:02:40],390 –> [00:02:45],129
an event that is pretty much a business

58
[00:02:42],969 –> [00:02:48],459
in and of itself they run correct

59
[00:02:45],129 –> [00:02:50],828
challenges several on every weekend all

60
[00:02:48],459 –> [00:02:52],840
around the country of various grades

61
[00:02:50],829 –> [00:02:55],239
there’s the original straight challenge

62
[00:02:52],840 –> [00:02:57],790
which is the one that I do which is a

63
[00:02:55],239 –> [00:03:01],299
nice guided tour of the city in which

64
[00:02:57],790 –> [00:03:03],700
tell held so he’ll go anywhere between

65
[00:03:01],299 –> [00:03:06],790
15 and 20 miles over the course of

66
[00:03:03],700 –> [00:03:09],849
anywhere between 13 and 17 hours

67
[00:03:06],790 –> [00:03:13],150
overnight starting at 9pm and going

68
[00:03:09],849 –> [00:03:14],290
going overnight to the next late morning

69
[00:03:13],150 –> [00:03:17],230
early afternoon

70
[00:03:14],290 –> [00:03:20],19
Wow and the whole time you’re wearing a

71
[00:03:17],230 –> [00:03:23],649
pact that is at least 40 to 45 pounds

72
[00:03:20],19 –> [00:03:25],780
you are doing all sorts of things that

73
[00:03:23],650 –> [00:03:28],120
usually starts out with the three-hour

74
[00:03:25],780 –> [00:03:32],109
what they call a welcome party which is

75
[00:03:28],120 –> [00:03:34],780
about three hours of the mix PT so you

76
[00:03:32],109 –> [00:03:38],379
know push-ups sit-ups / bees

77
[00:03:34],780 –> [00:03:40],870
bodybuilders other ingenious little

78
[00:03:38],379 –> [00:03:42],668
torture tests they’ve come up with like

79
[00:03:40],870 –> [00:03:43],599
the tunnel of love where you basically

80
[00:03:42],669 –> [00:03:45],760
are doing

81
[00:03:43],599 –> [00:03:47],828
chair chair stands with your pack in

82
[00:03:45],760 –> [00:03:51],190
front of you while the guy on the end

83
[00:03:47],829 –> [00:03:53],440
goes and crawls through your legs and

84
[00:03:51],190 –> [00:03:55],60
butt says you’re in the chair stand back

85
[00:03:53],440 –> [00:03:56],948
to back up against each other

86
[00:03:55],60 –> [00:03:59],530
oh no I’m sorry that’s not total of

87
[00:03:56],949 –> [00:04:01],60
that’s a that’s like a modified i forget

88
[00:03:59],530 –> [00:04:02],500
what they call that the tunnel love is

89
[00:04:01],60 –> [00:04:06],129
where you’re actually in bear-crawl

90
[00:04:02],500 –> [00:04:10],180
position basically doing a doing a Down

91
[00:04:06],129 –> [00:04:12],250
Dog arch and you’ve got the folks on the

92
[00:04:10],180 –> [00:04:13],840
end crawl through when wouldn’t get the

93
[00:04:12],250 –> [00:04:15],609
other side they form the next part of

94
[00:04:13],840 –> [00:04:17],978
that arch and it just keeps going like

95
[00:04:15],609 –> [00:04:21],728
that until I tell you to stop

96
[00:04:17],978 –> [00:04:24],130
so yeah this is it’s it’s the one of the

97
[00:04:21],728 –> [00:04:26],80
most physically and mentally challenging

98
[00:04:24],130 –> [00:04:28],30
events available today

99
[00:04:26],80 –> [00:04:29],620
have you always been into physically

100
[00:04:28],30 –> [00:04:33],520
challenging events

101
[00:04:29],620 –> [00:04:35],190
absolutely not no round but no arm is

102
[00:04:33],520 –> [00:04:38],520
this is something that

103
[00:04:35],190 –> [00:04:41],250
I got into thanks to my friend Yuri

104
[00:04:38],520 –> [00:04:43],740
mainly he was the first one to turn me

105
[00:04:41],250 –> [00:04:46],710
on to it my friend Yuri in boston and

106
[00:04:43],740 –> [00:04:47],790
urea is a really unique guy really

107
[00:04:46],710 –> [00:04:49],500
interesting guy

108
[00:04:47],790 –> [00:04:52],890
I’m not going to say too much about him

109
[00:04:49],500 –> [00:04:58],560
here but he’s he’s awesome and then my

110
[00:04:52],890 –> [00:05:01],979
friend Eric convince me to give it a

111
[00:04:58],560 –> [00:05:03],480
shot he did one I actually broke my foot

112
[00:05:01],980 –> [00:05:05],340
training for the one that we were

113
[00:05:03],480 –> [00:05:06],810
supposed to do together but then ended

114
[00:05:05],340 –> [00:05:08],849
up doing another one

115
[00:05:06],810 –> [00:05:11],910
a few months later after my foothill

116
[00:05:08],850 –> [00:05:14],430
it’s it’s good and what’s interesting is

117
[00:05:11],910 –> [00:05:16],920
that once you do it you kind of form a

118
[00:05:14],430 –> [00:05:18],630
friendship and bond with these strangers

119
[00:05:16],920 –> [00:05:20],190
that you’ve never met who you’ve gone

120
[00:05:18],630 –> [00:05:23],100
through probably one of the hardest

121
[00:05:20],190 –> [00:05:24],900
things in your life with and they become

122
[00:05:23],100 –> [00:05:28],290
they become good friends they become

123
[00:05:24],900 –> [00:05:29],370
like brothers and and it’s not just you

124
[00:05:28],290 –> [00:05:31],380
know the folks that you did the

125
[00:05:29],370 –> [00:05:33],360
challenge with but it’s all the folks

126
[00:05:31],380 –> [00:05:36],659
who have all done correct challenges I

127
[00:05:33],360 –> [00:05:39],60
you know have the way I look at i have

128
[00:05:36],660 –> [00:05:40],830
brothers and sisters in just about every

129
[00:05:39],60 –> [00:05:43],260
city in the country and several of the

130
[00:05:40],830 –> [00:05:46],500
major cities of the world just that I

131
[00:05:43],260 –> [00:05:48],990
could call upon if I were needed because

132
[00:05:46],500 –> [00:05:50],880
we share that bond if that makes sense

133
[00:05:48],990 –> [00:05:52],410
not totally makes sense i mean we’re

134
[00:05:50],880 –> [00:05:56],219
talking over the Internet

135
[00:05:52],410 –> [00:05:57],960
yeah we never met yeah exactly so you

136
[00:05:56],220 –> [00:06:00],270
know I always always say that you know

137
[00:05:57],960 –> [00:06:01],49
strangers are just best friends you

138
[00:06:00],270 –> [00:06:04],799
haven’t met yet

139
[00:06:01],50 –> [00:06:06],870
yes yes that is in and that is

140
[00:06:04],800 –> [00:06:10],770
definitely something I believe in as

141
[00:06:06],870 –> [00:06:12],30
well so yeah sure okay yeah we’ve talked

142
[00:06:10],770 –> [00:06:12],599
all about go rock and i haven’t even

143
[00:06:12],30 –> [00:06:17],789
talked

144
[00:06:12],600 –> [00:06:19],260
ok now the head of not a problem want to

145
[00:06:17],790 –> [00:06:21],630
give some background about yourself

146
[00:06:19],260 –> [00:06:25],230
I’m a writer i live in st. Paul

147
[00:06:21],630 –> [00:06:29],310
Minnesota with my six-year-old daughter

148
[00:06:25],230 –> [00:06:33],930
and my beautiful wife of eight years we

149
[00:06:29],310 –> [00:06:36],720
have a beautiful home in 1886 victorian

150
[00:06:33],930 –> [00:06:39],120
which unlike most homes around that

151
[00:06:36],720 –> [00:06:42],180
period of time was built by a woman by

152
[00:06:39],120 –> [00:06:44],940
the name of sarah chapman yeah this big

153
[00:06:42],180 –> [00:06:46],980
beautiful you know queen and painted

154
[00:06:44],940 –> [00:06:51],510
lady you know just have

155
[00:06:46],980 –> [00:06:56],130
dog have three cats you know and and

156
[00:06:51],510 –> [00:06:59],190
just kind of you have a business with my

157
[00:06:56],130 –> [00:07:01],469
wife where most of my income comes from

158
[00:06:59],190 –> [00:07:04],710
my writing and things related to it

159
[00:07:01],470 –> [00:07:05],400
several books I’ve written the the blogs

160
[00:07:04],710 –> [00:07:10],169
i right

161
[00:07:05],400 –> [00:07:14],130
yes multiple the yellow other other odd

162
[00:07:10],170 –> [00:07:15],930
things i do then I’ve also do technical

163
[00:07:14],130 –> [00:07:18],90
consulting on the side with the focus on

164
[00:07:15],930 –> [00:07:23],880
Macintosh that’s a business that I’ve

165
[00:07:18],90 –> [00:07:27],960
had on my own for WoW over 10 years but

166
[00:07:23],880 –> [00:07:31],950
my wife and I decided to merge our solo

167
[00:07:27],960 –> [00:07:34],830
consultancies into a LLC at the

168
[00:07:31],950 –> [00:07:37],890
beginning of the last year because while

169
[00:07:34],830 –> [00:07:40],380
it saved us a ton of money in taxes so

170
[00:07:37],890 –> [00:07:41],70
by time i mean almost ten thousand

171
[00:07:40],380 –> [00:07:44],700
dollars

172
[00:07:41],70 –> [00:07:46],740
well yeah it was a big chunk of change

173
[00:07:44],700 –> [00:07:50],310
so then that’s worked out pretty well

174
[00:07:46],740 –> [00:07:52],350
even though some of our clients do over

175
[00:07:50],310 –> [00:07:54],870
while but only very very slightly

176
[00:07:52],350 –> [00:07:58],500
she’s a non-profit arts management

177
[00:07:54],870 –> [00:08:00],930
consultant and nonprofit and arts

178
[00:07:58],500 –> [00:08:05],700
management consultant and so you know

179
[00:08:00],930 –> [00:08:07],710
she helps very small nonprofits kind of

180
[00:08:05],700 –> [00:08:09],960
handled the business end of things that

181
[00:08:07],710 –> [00:08:13],620
they otherwise do not have the resources

182
[00:08:09],960 –> [00:08:15],479
or talent to do and so yeah we both work

183
[00:08:13],620 –> [00:08:17],190
for ourselves essentially yeah i mean

184
[00:08:15],480 –> [00:08:21],330
that’s that’s really the life isn’t it

185
[00:08:17],190 –> [00:08:24],870
it is you know but it’s not necessarily

186
[00:08:21],330 –> [00:08:27],419
a dream right that of a lot of people

187
[00:08:24],870 –> [00:08:29],100
might cook it up to be I mean is for us

188
[00:08:27],420 –> [00:08:31],920
I don’t know that it’s for everybody

189
[00:08:29],100 –> [00:08:34],290
because keep in mind that when you

190
[00:08:31],920 –> [00:08:36],780
decide to work for yourself all of those

191
[00:08:34],289 –> [00:08:38],880
things that you got used to an employer

192
[00:08:36],780 –> [00:08:42],209
doing for you and that’s the trade-off

193
[00:08:38],880 –> [00:08:45],270
is that you know working for somebody

194
[00:08:42],210 –> [00:08:47],670
they take care of a lot of stuff you

195
[00:08:45],270 –> [00:08:50],10
know you kind of show up and you you do

196
[00:08:47],670 –> [00:08:55],680
the job that you’re assigned and you do

197
[00:08:50],10 –> [00:08:58],260
that for 40 60 70 80 hours a day and you

198
[00:08:55],680 –> [00:08:59],500
know or a week and at the end of that

199
[00:08:58],260 –> [00:09:02],230
you get this paycheck

200
[00:08:59],500 –> [00:09:04],510
that more often than not these days

201
[00:09:02],230 –> [00:09:06],430
automatically gets tricked just to drop

202
[00:09:04],510 –> [00:09:08],170
into your bank account so you don’t even

203
[00:09:06],430 –> [00:09:11],410
have to take the check to the bank you

204
[00:09:08],170 –> [00:09:14],469
don’t have to sign it just shows up and

205
[00:09:11],410 –> [00:09:17],500
41 people that’s a that’s a very easy

206
[00:09:14],470 –> [00:09:20],560
dream life because the alternative is

207
[00:09:17],500 –> [00:09:23],560
well you do all that stuff yourself you

208
[00:09:20],560 –> [00:09:26],20
have to chase down the money he tell you

209
[00:09:23],560 –> [00:09:30],99
have to ask for it you have to you have

210
[00:09:26],20 –> [00:09:32],949
to make things with the expectation that

211
[00:09:30],100 –> [00:09:35],830
you will get paid for it eventually you

212
[00:09:32],950 –> [00:09:39],910
have to you know all that stuff because

213
[00:09:35],830 –> [00:09:42],640
his HR insurance no taxes all of that

214
[00:09:39],910 –> [00:09:46],569
stuff you’re dealing with in some way

215
[00:09:42],640 –> [00:09:48],370
shape or form some manner it all that

216
[00:09:46],570 –> [00:09:50],230
stuff is not just being done for you and

217
[00:09:48],370 –> [00:09:51],910
that’s invested trade-off

218
[00:09:50],230 –> [00:09:53],950
I mean believe me there have been days

219
[00:09:51],910 –> [00:09:56],680
when I’ve been like cash man i should

220
[00:09:53],950 –> [00:09:59],560
just you know I think a good barista at

221
[00:09:56],680 –> [00:10:02],949
starbucks i think i’m not personable on

222
[00:09:59],560 –> [00:10:06],69
nice you know I can keep a smile on my

223
[00:10:02],950 –> [00:10:08],530
face even in the even when dealing with

224
[00:10:06],70 –> [00:10:10],360
the most difficult of people i can just

225
[00:10:08],530 –> [00:10:12],939
kind of deal with them you know I think

226
[00:10:10],360 –> [00:10:17],380
I think I’d be a good barista at

227
[00:10:12],940 –> [00:10:18],910
starbucks actually the problem is it

228
[00:10:17],380 –> [00:10:21],640
doesn’t fit into my schedule

229
[00:10:18],910 –> [00:10:23],920
no because like you know you know they

230
[00:10:21],640 –> [00:10:26],560
generally need people to come in at five

231
[00:10:23],920 –> [00:10:29],260
and work until two or something like

232
[00:10:26],560 –> [00:10:31],599
that and you know I’ve got actually

233
[00:10:29],260 –> [00:10:34],750
value my time with my family to life for

234
[00:10:31],600 –> [00:10:37],360
me and what I like to say is I’m and I’m

235
[00:10:34],750 –> [00:10:40],510
both a a horrible boss and a horrible

236
[00:10:37],360 –> [00:10:45],130
employee so on best I’m best working on

237
[00:10:40],510 –> [00:10:48],280
my own actually but yeah yeah I’ve been

238
[00:10:45],130 –> [00:10:50],530
been living that dream for well six

239
[00:10:48],280 –> [00:10:52],870
years now as far as working for myself

240
[00:10:50],530 –> [00:10:58],329
so what does working for yourself mean

241
[00:10:52],870 –> [00:11:01],630
to you Josh a freedom flexibility you

242
[00:10:58],330 –> [00:11:03],850
know I can you know I kind of decide my

243
[00:11:01],630 –> [00:11:07],360
own schedule i can take on as much work

244
[00:11:03],850 –> [00:11:10],29
as I need to and leave the rest behind

245
[00:11:07],360 –> [00:11:14],110
you know I really really really love

246
[00:11:10],29 –> [00:11:18],760
what I do you know I think ideally what

247
[00:11:14],110 –> [00:11:20],680
what we all want to find is we want to

248
[00:11:18],760 –> [00:11:23],860
find a way to get paid for something

249
[00:11:20],680 –> [00:11:26],349
that not only we love to do but that we

250
[00:11:23],860 –> [00:11:28],720
and not the only that we never get tired

251
[00:11:26],350 –> [00:11:31],930
of doing but that we almost can’t help

252
[00:11:28],720 –> [00:11:36],519
ourselves from doing right that what I

253
[00:11:31],930 –> [00:11:38],949
get paid for is a byproduct of things

254
[00:11:36],519 –> [00:11:40],779
that I would be doing anyway right that

255
[00:11:38],950 –> [00:11:43],600
I would be doing for no money i would

256
[00:11:40],779 –> [00:11:49],000
happily do for free if it came down to

257
[00:11:43],600 –> [00:11:50],920
it right and i think i think a lot of

258
[00:11:49],000 –> [00:11:55],690
people miss that point a lot of people

259
[00:11:50],920 –> [00:11:56],709
miss the there’s the kind of cult of do

260
[00:11:55],690 –> [00:11:59],79
what you love

261
[00:11:56],709 –> [00:12:02],649
right that’s increasingly vocal

262
[00:11:59],79 –> [00:12:06],790
especially in an economy where jobs are

263
[00:12:02],649 –> [00:12:09],910
difficult to find you know I think it’s

264
[00:12:06],790 –> [00:12:12],579
really easy for people to get caught up

265
[00:12:09],910 –> [00:12:15],399
in that dream and in that mantra when in

266
[00:12:12],579 –> [00:12:16],510
fact I don’t think it’s so much do what

267
[00:12:15],399 –> [00:12:18],220
you love

268
[00:12:16],510 –> [00:12:20],380
although that’s part of it yeah i mean

269
[00:12:18],220 –> [00:12:21],279
you’re gonna love it but you know do

270
[00:12:20],380 –> [00:12:23],769
what you do

271
[00:12:21],279 –> [00:12:26],320
do what you do anyway and see if there’s

272
[00:12:23],769 –> [00:12:28],750
a way you might be able to get paid for

273
[00:12:26],320 –> [00:12:30],370
that and if you don’t don’t be too

274
[00:12:28],750 –> [00:12:32],500
unhappy about if it just stays some

275
[00:12:30],370 –> [00:12:36],100
hobby that you just do because of it

276
[00:12:32],500 –> [00:12:39],399
well that’s that’s the way it is you

277
[00:12:36],100 –> [00:12:41],170
know I think that you know in this world

278
[00:12:39],399 –> [00:12:43],329
anyone can build a business out of

279
[00:12:41],170 –> [00:12:48],729
virtually almost anything

280
[00:12:43],329 –> [00:12:50],109
the the key is that it takes a lot of

281
[00:12:48],730 –> [00:12:52],390
hard work and it takes a long time

282
[00:12:50],110 –> [00:12:54],760
you’re not going to just quit your job

283
[00:12:52],390 –> [00:12:57],490
and leave tomorrow and suddenly have you

284
[00:12:54],760 –> [00:12:59],920
know tens of thousands of dollars a

285
[00:12:57],490 –> [00:13:02],649
month following into your lapis is just

286
[00:12:59],920 –> [00:13:04],630
not going to happen it might happen for

287
[00:13:02],649 –> [00:13:07],300
some people on there are those rare

288
[00:13:04],630 –> [00:13:09],490
exceptions I mean heck I’ve got a friend

289
[00:13:07],300 –> [00:13:11],140
who won the library i mean literally won

290
[00:13:09],490 –> [00:13:13],000
the lottery and guess what he’s still

291
[00:13:11],140 –> [00:13:20],530
showing up at his job every day

292
[00:13:13],000 –> [00:13:23],230
okay you know i mean it in you know so

293
[00:13:20],530 –> [00:13:26],410
why well beyond because he knows that

294
[00:13:23],230 –> [00:13:28],450
that’s actually the key to Baton that

295
[00:13:26],410 –> [00:13:31],270
money sticking around right yeah

296
[00:13:28],450 –> [00:13:33],640
definitely I i think im gonna really

297
[00:13:31],270 –> [00:13:35],949
kind of much different place from a lot

298
[00:13:33],640 –> [00:13:37],750
of people that would be in that sort of

299
[00:13:35],950 –> [00:13:39],10
situation i started off in a much

300
[00:13:37],750 –> [00:13:43],270
different place

301
[00:13:39],10 –> [00:13:47],170
I was a full-time single dad to my two

302
[00:13:43],270 –> [00:13:51],640
sons i have two adult sons for you know

303
[00:13:47],170 –> [00:13:56],770
essentially 10 years in because of that

304
[00:13:51],640 –> [00:13:59],290
I mean there were many many days when i

305
[00:13:56],770 –> [00:14:02],350
was so broke I we were so poor that I

306
[00:13:59],290 –> [00:14:05],50
would literally have to decide it

307
[00:14:02],350 –> [00:14:07],000
planned out when the one meal i was

308
[00:14:05],50 –> [00:14:09],609
going to be able to eat that day would

309
[00:14:07],000 –> [00:14:14],320
happen in order to make sure that I was

310
[00:14:09],610 –> [00:14:16],210
not too hungry and you know still would

311
[00:14:14],320 –> [00:14:18],460
go to bed hungry knowing i would wake up

312
[00:14:16],210 –> [00:14:21],700
in the morning and not be able to afford

313
[00:14:18],460 –> [00:14:23],890
to eat until probably two or three in

314
[00:14:21],700 –> [00:14:25],570
the afternoon and that that would be my

315
[00:14:23],890 –> [00:14:28],780
one do one meal of the day

316
[00:14:25],570 –> [00:14:31],300
let me it sounds crazy but yes you know

317
[00:14:28],780 –> [00:14:33],970
but i did that so that my son’s could

318
[00:14:31],300 –> [00:14:36],729
have three but you know during that time

319
[00:14:33],970 –> [00:14:41],860
I worked really really hard to make sure

320
[00:14:36],730 –> [00:14:45],40
that that I kept my my debt really super

321
[00:14:41],860 –> [00:14:47],950
low arm and kept my overhead really

322
[00:14:45],40 –> [00:14:49],540
super low because I didn’t have that you

323
[00:14:47],950 –> [00:14:51],730
know there’s two ways to have more money

324
[00:14:49],540 –> [00:14:53],589
you can either make more which you know

325
[00:14:51],730 –> [00:14:57],730
i was working so much I was literally

326
[00:14:53],589 –> [00:15:00],730
working three jobs to just make ends

327
[00:14:57],730 –> [00:15:02],620
meet with what I had arm or to spend

328
[00:15:00],730 –> [00:15:05],680
less and that’s what I did I guides i

329
[00:15:02],620 –> [00:15:09],490
spent drastically less and i managed to

330
[00:15:05],680 –> [00:15:11],500
keep a roof over our heads and a car in

331
[00:15:09],490 –> [00:15:13],780
the driveway and managed to make sure

332
[00:15:11],500 –> [00:15:15],490
that my son’s never missed a meal and

333
[00:15:13],780 –> [00:15:17],730
managed to make sure that they got

334
[00:15:15],490 –> [00:15:21],240
anything that they needed

335
[00:15:17],730 –> [00:15:23],459
and so when I did finally you know get

336
[00:15:21],240 –> [00:15:26],639
married and you know kind of things

337
[00:15:23],459 –> [00:15:28],949
turned around greatly as far as our

338
[00:15:26],639 –> [00:15:33],149
income and ability and such like that

339
[00:15:28],949 –> [00:15:36],839
and ya didn’t change my relationship to

340
[00:15:33],149 –> [00:15:40],260
to debt you know as it stands right now

341
[00:15:36],839 –> [00:15:42],930
we have we have three houses that we

342
[00:15:40],260 –> [00:15:44],490
owned outright we have three cars want

343
[00:15:42],930 –> [00:15:48],300
two cars and a truck that we owned

344
[00:15:44],490 –> [00:15:48],810
outright we you know we have credit

345
[00:15:48],300 –> [00:15:50],939
cards

346
[00:15:48],810 –> [00:15:53],609
sure but guess what we pay them off in

347
[00:15:50],940 –> [00:15:57],389
full every single month we keep our

348
[00:15:53],610 –> [00:15:59],519
overhead really really really low arm

349
[00:15:57],389 –> [00:16:01],829
and because of that we don’t need to

350
[00:15:59],519 –> [00:16:05],130
make a lot of money in order to survive

351
[00:16:01],829 –> [00:16:07],199
and I think I think I think I think

352
[00:16:05],130 –> [00:16:10],829
that’s another part of the equation that

353
[00:16:07],199 –> [00:16:13],439
often gets overlooked is that is not

354
[00:16:10],829 –> [00:16:16],290
just about having a dream and chasing it

355
[00:16:13],440 –> [00:16:18],630
is also about doing everything you

356
[00:16:16],290 –> [00:16:22],560
possibly can doing all the upfront work

357
[00:16:18],630 –> [00:16:25],680
to facilitate that dream so you have the

358
[00:16:22],560 –> [00:16:27],540
freedom and ability to chase it so you

359
[00:16:25],680 –> [00:16:29],969
don’t have to worry about

360
[00:16:27],540 –> [00:16:31],980
oh I’ve got this bill to pay or that

361
[00:16:29],970 –> [00:16:34],79
mortgage or this credit card or this

362
[00:16:31],980 –> [00:16:35],459
student loan or this that or this this

363
[00:16:34],79 –> [00:16:37],50
right because when you’re in that

364
[00:16:35],459 –> [00:16:39],810
situation you’re nothing more than a

365
[00:16:37],50 –> [00:16:42],959
middleman you’re transferring money from

366
[00:16:39],810 –> [00:16:45],180
one big major corporation IE the one

367
[00:16:42],959 –> [00:16:47],670
that you work for whatever you know

368
[00:16:45],180 –> [00:16:50],250
you’re trading someone else’s money

369
[00:16:47],670 –> [00:16:52],290
you’re taking someone else’s money and

370
[00:16:50],250 –> [00:16:55],19
you’re giving it away to another big

371
[00:16:52],290 –> [00:16:57],180
corporation right you are just a

372
[00:16:55],19 –> [00:17:00],29
middleman your transfer station for that

373
[00:16:57],180 –> [00:17:01],680
money in order to get out from under

374
[00:17:00],29 –> [00:17:04],709
that we have to you know

375
[00:17:01],680 –> [00:17:06],780
hey you have to cut off the supply on

376
[00:17:04],709 –> [00:17:09],299
one of those ends before you cut off the

377
[00:17:06],780 –> [00:17:12],750
supply on the other two arch or i should

378
[00:17:09],299 –> [00:17:14],579
say cut off the the feed on one of those

379
[00:17:12],750 –> [00:17:16],709
end so you cut off the supply on the

380
[00:17:14],579 –> [00:17:19],139
other I know all of that was a big

381
[00:17:16],709 –> [00:17:23],429
roundabout explanation to say yes I’m

382
[00:17:19],140 –> [00:17:25],290
living my dream and I and I’m doing it

383
[00:17:23],429 –> [00:17:27],449
because of a lot of a lot of hard work

384
[00:17:25],290 –> [00:17:30],80
and a lot of sacrifice for a lot of

385
[00:17:27],449 –> [00:17:32],149
years before I was able to get to

386
[00:17:30],80 –> [00:17:35],720
the point i think that it’s really

387
[00:17:32],149 –> [00:17:38],268
awesome that you you’re smart enough to

388
[00:17:35],720 –> [00:17:41],120
to know that you have to cut down

389
[00:17:38],269 –> [00:17:43],610
overhead to make all that happen because

390
[00:17:41],120 –> [00:17:44],870
like you said there’s you know it said

391
[00:17:43],610 –> [00:17:47],750
it takes a lot of money to make these

392
[00:17:44],870 –> [00:17:48],320
dreams happen but there’s always another

393
[00:17:47],750 –> [00:17:50],450
way

394
[00:17:48],320 –> [00:17:53],360
and as to reduce the cost to make it

395
[00:17:50],450 –> [00:17:55],669
happen again and and I think that you

396
[00:17:53],360 –> [00:17:58],70
put it beautifully and and hopefully

397
[00:17:55],669 –> [00:18:01],730
inspire somebody to look at themselves

398
[00:17:58],70 –> [00:18:05],689
and and to cut down on what they’ve got

399
[00:18:01],730 –> [00:18:08],29
in order to I I’m of sacrifice the right

400
[00:18:05],690 –> [00:18:08],960
word but in some cases it probably is

401
[00:18:08],29 –> [00:18:12],289
the right word

402
[00:18:08],960 –> [00:18:12],860
m for them to to make it what their goal

403
[00:18:12],289 –> [00:18:15],529
is

404
[00:18:12],860 –> [00:18:17],658
yeah well that that’s part of the you

405
[00:18:15],529 –> [00:18:19],880
know and that that doesn’t come like

406
[00:18:17],659 –> [00:18:20],870
that’s not something you do after you

407
[00:18:19],880 –> [00:18:22],220
make that leap

408
[00:18:20],870 –> [00:18:24],529
that’s not something you have that’s the

409
[00:18:22],220 –> [00:18:26],750
thing you do for years before you make

410
[00:18:24],529 –> [00:18:30],830
the leap you you can set things up that

411
[00:18:26],750 –> [00:18:33],889
way because I mean if you were to look

412
[00:18:30],830 –> [00:18:36],500
at what my wife and i pay ourselves

413
[00:18:33],889 –> [00:18:39],289
because you know we have with the way

414
[00:18:36],500 –> [00:18:41],929
their businesses set out it’s it’s a LLC

415
[00:18:39],289 –> [00:18:44],779
this tax SMS corporates it’s a busy

416
[00:18:41],929 –> [00:18:47],630
business and it’s a business that has a

417
[00:18:44],779 –> [00:18:49],580
payroll that and we’re the two employees

418
[00:18:47],630 –> [00:18:50],330
of that business of that makes sense

419
[00:18:49],580 –> [00:18:53],210
right

420
[00:18:50],330 –> [00:18:57],678
and so we cut a paycheck to ourselves

421
[00:18:53],210 –> [00:19:01],850
from that business every month and if

422
[00:18:57],679 –> [00:19:02],899
you saw what that was the most people

423
[00:19:01],850 –> [00:19:04],668
would laugh

424
[00:19:02],899 –> [00:19:06],260
most people would say there’s no way i

425
[00:19:04],669 –> [00:19:09],80
could live on that amount of money

426
[00:19:06],260 –> [00:19:12],710
alright but we don’t pay ourselves any

427
[00:19:09],80 –> [00:19:17],629
more than we then we need to write we

428
[00:19:12],710 –> [00:19:19],70
and so yeah I guess you know that that’s

429
[00:19:17],630 –> [00:19:21],620
a big part of it you know

430
[00:19:19],70 –> [00:19:22],820
take a look at you know what is it that

431
[00:19:21],620 –> [00:19:26],600
you need

432
[00:19:22],820 –> [00:19:32],269
absolutely bare minimum every month to

433
[00:19:26],600 –> [00:19:34],219
to be able to to live and well gosh we

434
[00:19:32],269 –> [00:19:38],809
got so before we got married my wife and

435
[00:19:34],220 –> [00:19:40],760
I we took this great course by a woman

436
[00:19:38],809 –> [00:19:45],470
by the name of ruth hatin

437
[00:19:40],760 –> [00:19:47],390
andrew hayden has has a book called for

438
[00:19:45],470 –> [00:19:51],320
i believe it’s called for richer not

439
[00:19:47],390 –> [00:19:52],910
poor the money book for couples and then

440
[00:19:51],320 –> [00:19:56],720
it was a great course because basically

441
[00:19:52],910 –> [00:19:59],120
one of the biggest causes of divorce and

442
[00:19:56],720 –> [00:20:00],860
the breakups and things like that is

443
[00:19:59],120 –> [00:20:04],310
actually disagreements over money or

444
[00:20:00],860 –> [00:20:07],610
come down to or come down to money

445
[00:20:04],310 –> [00:20:11],000
struggles causing so much stress that it

446
[00:20:07],610 –> [00:20:14],120
leads out other places right arm and so

447
[00:20:11],000 –> [00:20:16],40
we kind of knew right off that we wanted

448
[00:20:14],120 –> [00:20:18],260
to be get on the same page when it came

449
[00:20:16],40 –> [00:20:21],170
to money to this wonderful course

450
[00:20:18],260 –> [00:20:24],200
between one of the kind of the nicest

451
[00:20:21],170 –> [00:20:26],510
ideas that that came out of that course

452
[00:20:24],200 –> [00:20:29],780
was just for more than anyone can do

453
[00:20:26],510 –> [00:20:32],900
this is great just for a month track

454
[00:20:29],780 –> [00:20:34],610
everything that you spend money on em

455
[00:20:32],900 –> [00:20:36],560
you know the bills and stuff like that

456
[00:20:34],610 –> [00:20:38],750
yeah for sure but those are going to be

457
[00:20:36],560 –> [00:20:41],179
fixed costs look at all of the other

458
[00:20:38],750 –> [00:20:43],610
little things that you buy at the cup of

459
[00:20:41],180 –> [00:20:46],340
coffee at starbucks the the gas at the

460
[00:20:43],610 –> [00:20:48],409
gas station the you know basically you

461
[00:20:46],340 –> [00:20:50],659
know each individual track what they

462
[00:20:48],410 –> [00:20:52],910
individually spend that you know take

463
[00:20:50],660 –> [00:20:55],400
the take the bills out equation just

464
[00:20:52],910 –> [00:20:57],530
what you individually spent all right

465
[00:20:55],400 –> [00:21:00],260
and once you’ve done that for a month

466
[00:20:57],530 –> [00:21:03],230
there you go that’s the cash that you

467
[00:21:00],260 –> [00:21:04],520
are going to take out of the bank you

468
[00:21:03],230 –> [00:21:06],800
know you’re out of your paycheck or

469
[00:21:04],520 –> [00:21:09],830
whatever for the following month right

470
[00:21:06],800 –> [00:21:13],639
and if you just have that amount in cash

471
[00:21:09],830 –> [00:21:16],970
whatever that is what you’ll find is

472
[00:21:13],640 –> [00:21:19],250
your a lot more conscious of how much

473
[00:21:16],970 –> [00:21:20],570
money you actually have in our spending

474
[00:21:19],250 –> [00:21:23],120
and you know because you kind of see

475
[00:21:20],570 –> [00:21:25],40
that wide dwindling down you know it’s a

476
[00:21:23],120 –> [00:21:27],560
very physical representation

477
[00:21:25],40 –> [00:21:29],960
it’s really easy to get lost when you’re

478
[00:21:27],560 –> [00:21:31],940
dealing with cards no debit or credit

479
[00:21:29],960 –> [00:21:34],220
cards or whatever that kind of mindset

480
[00:21:31],940 –> [00:21:36],680
gets lost but you have it physically you

481
[00:21:34],220 –> [00:21:39],950
can really see it but the other part of

482
[00:21:36],680 –> [00:21:41],810
it too is that now suddenly you’re

483
[00:21:39],950 –> [00:21:45],470
making some hard choices you’re thinking

484
[00:21:41],810 –> [00:21:47],960
all that nice blouse and I saw on sale

485
[00:21:45],470 –> [00:21:49],299
at the store cash it was only ten

486
[00:21:47],960 –> [00:21:53],139
dollars but

487
[00:21:49],299 –> [00:21:55],330
if i spend this ten dollars i now have

488
[00:21:53],139 –> [00:21:59],350
to give up two of my starbucks things

489
[00:21:55],330 –> [00:22:02],168
this month or you know I mean like I I i

490
[00:21:59],350 –> [00:22:04],779
have to skip Starbucks for two days and

491
[00:22:02],169 –> [00:22:06],610
and you start to really kind of learn

492
[00:22:04],779 –> [00:22:10],239
what it’s like to make those sorts of

493
[00:22:06],610 –> [00:22:12],668
choices between if i do this then i have

494
[00:22:10],239 –> [00:22:15],669
to give up that do that for a few months

495
[00:22:12],669 –> [00:22:21],759
and you’ll find you get really really

496
[00:22:15],669 –> [00:22:25],210
really good ad ad and living within your

497
[00:22:21],759 –> [00:22:27],789
means and knowing exactly what your

498
[00:22:25],210 –> [00:22:31],509
trading for the random money choices you

499
[00:22:27],789 –> [00:22:32],440
make tremendously helpful advice highly

500
[00:22:31],509 –> [00:22:36],220
recommend it

501
[00:22:32],440 –> [00:22:38],230
so yeah I mean it is it’s it’s you know

502
[00:22:36],220 –> [00:22:41],80
there’s there’s a lot of sacrifice a lot

503
[00:22:38],230 –> [00:22:42],580
of kind of ups upfront stuff you know

504
[00:22:41],80 –> [00:22:45],220
that you have to be plus you have to be

505
[00:22:42],580 –> [00:22:47],259
a really good like I said you’re running

506
[00:22:45],220 –> [00:22:49],90
a business so you have to be prepared to

507
[00:22:47],259 –> [00:22:50],980
run a business even if that is just the

508
[00:22:49],90 –> [00:22:54],399
business of one you have to be ready do

509
[00:22:50],980 –> [00:22:55],929
you know to be the one who counts the

510
[00:22:54],399 –> [00:22:57],758
money to be the one who goes and

511
[00:22:55],929 –> [00:23:01],269
invoices for the money to be the person

512
[00:22:57],759 –> [00:23:04],419
who you know who sets their own price

513
[00:23:01],269 –> [00:23:07],659
who then you know has to pay taxes on

514
[00:23:04],419 –> [00:23:11],19
that who then has to all of those things

515
[00:23:07],659 –> [00:23:12],999
that you used to be able to not track

516
[00:23:11],19 –> [00:23:16],239
now you’re tracking every single expense

517
[00:23:12],999 –> [00:23:19],509
you know you’re tracking the the the

518
[00:23:16],239 –> [00:23:21],340
apps that you by the the the computer

519
[00:23:19],509 –> [00:23:24],190
books that you purchase if you’re a

520
[00:23:21],340 –> [00:23:27],519
computer consultant why well because

521
[00:23:24],190 –> [00:23:30],369
well you get to write that off your

522
[00:23:27],519 –> [00:23:31],239
taxes you better you better track that

523
[00:23:30],369 –> [00:23:34],779
stuff

524
[00:23:31],239 –> [00:23:37],149
oh ok I mean yeah you’re doing all of

525
[00:23:34],779 –> [00:23:39],759
those things that normally a business

526
[00:23:37],149 –> [00:23:41],859
does for you if you work for one so what

527
[00:23:39],759 –> [00:23:49],899
would you say inspired shoe my little

528
[00:23:41],859 –> [00:23:52],449
girl you know I were if you look at all

529
[00:23:49],899 –> [00:23:56],498
of my writing you will see her there

530
[00:23:52],450 –> [00:23:59],409
haha you know a lot of what I’m writing

531
[00:23:56],499 –> [00:24:01],610
I’m writing to future her because I

532
[00:23:59],409 –> [00:24:04],580
don’t think that the world is getting

533
[00:24:01],610 –> [00:24:08],570
any less complicated when it comes to

534
[00:24:04],580 –> [00:24:09],320
living a life you have so that inspires

535
[00:24:08],570 –> [00:24:13],520
me

536
[00:24:09],320 –> [00:24:17],000
I’m inspired by just the you know just

537
[00:24:13],520 –> [00:24:20],870
the day-to-day living in conversations I

538
[00:24:17],000 –> [00:24:23],299
have yeah the as a writer you know one

539
[00:24:20],870 –> [00:24:24],979
of the things I try to explain to people

540
[00:24:23],299 –> [00:24:27],710
i don’t think anyone is not a writer

541
[00:24:24],980 –> [00:24:29],809
really gets it is that I’m never not

542
[00:24:27],710 –> [00:24:31],850
writing I’m always writing that

543
[00:24:29],809 –> [00:24:33],860
everything that I experienced every

544
[00:24:31],850 –> [00:24:35],809
moment every second everything I see

545
[00:24:33],860 –> [00:24:37],760
everything I smell everything I taste

546
[00:24:35],809 –> [00:24:39],440
every conversation I have every word

547
[00:24:37],760 –> [00:24:41],780
that passes through my brain

548
[00:24:39],440 –> [00:24:46],190
here comes out of my mouth everyone that

549
[00:24:41],780 –> [00:24:48],590
I hear that’s all part of the writing it

550
[00:24:46],190 –> [00:24:50],510
all ends up in the writing it’s all kind

551
[00:24:48],590 –> [00:24:54],439
of intertwined with the writing and so

552
[00:24:50],510 –> [00:24:57],470
you know people may ask well you know

553
[00:24:54],440 –> [00:25:01],460
when when do you take a vacation never

554
[00:24:57],470 –> [00:25:03],679
because even my vacations are part of my

555
[00:25:01],460 –> [00:25:06],830
experiences from those experiences end

556
[00:25:03],679 –> [00:25:09],320
up and what I’m when what I do and quite

557
[00:25:06],830 –> [00:25:15],889
frankly I don’t want any job that I can

558
[00:25:09],320 –> [00:25:18],918
leave behind right I I don’t want any

559
[00:25:15],890 –> [00:25:22],400
job that I’m not doing in some way shape

560
[00:25:18],919 –> [00:25:24],80
or form all the time or working on in

561
[00:25:22],400 –> [00:25:27],350
some way shape or form all the time

562
[00:25:24],80 –> [00:25:28],159
that’s just not who I am or how I’m

563
[00:25:27],350 –> [00:25:32],418
built

564
[00:25:28],160 –> [00:25:33],650
you know and so that’s you know that’s

565
[00:25:32],419 –> [00:25:35],270
that’s all

566
[00:25:33],650 –> [00:25:38],600
inspirational to me i guess you could

567
[00:25:35],270 –> [00:25:40],970
say incredibly inspired by my life to

568
[00:25:38],600 –> [00:25:44],59
that shit i should say that my wife is

569
[00:25:40],970 –> [00:25:46],549
actually having she’s she’s friggin

570
[00:25:44],59 –> [00:25:50],510
amazing if you you want to talk to

571
[00:25:46],549 –> [00:25:52],940
someone who works her butt off for I

572
[00:25:50],510 –> [00:25:59],270
mean first of all she makes easily four

573
[00:25:52],940 –> [00:26:00],260
times what I do she is in an incredibly

574
[00:25:59],270 –> [00:26:04],370
high demand

575
[00:26:00],260 –> [00:26:06],980
incredibly well respected and the what

576
[00:26:04],370 –> [00:26:10],489
she is able to bring to the table the

577
[00:26:06],980 –> [00:26:12],680
wealth of skills and talent that she

578
[00:26:10],490 –> [00:26:14],690
brings to the table when someone will

579
[00:26:12],680 –> [00:26:18],110
know when a small organization hires my

580
[00:26:14],690 –> [00:26:21],110
wife they really are hiring are getting

581
[00:26:18],110 –> [00:26:25],10
what other larger organizations usually

582
[00:26:21],110 –> [00:26:27],439
do with between five and ten people and

583
[00:26:25],10 –> [00:26:32],420
she works incredibly hard and she is

584
[00:26:27],440 –> [00:26:34],730
incredibly smart and incredibly yeah and

585
[00:26:32],420 –> [00:26:37],280
she’s she’s she’s really super inspired

586
[00:26:34],730 –> [00:26:39],440
well maybe you can convince her to come

587
[00:26:37],280 –> [00:26:42],110
on the show i should i should actually

588
[00:26:39],440 –> [00:26:43],940
although he had she wouldn’t have the

589
[00:26:42],110 –> [00:26:46],729
time I mean that’s part of it right is

590
[00:26:43],940 –> [00:26:48],650
that she and she works her butt off

591
[00:26:46],730 –> [00:26:50],600
she really does you know the trade-off

592
[00:26:48],650 –> [00:26:53],30
though is that I’m the one who does a

593
[00:26:50],600 –> [00:26:55],310
lot of the stuff that like I’m the one

594
[00:26:53],30 –> [00:26:57],410
who you know dr spirit Rick’s around to

595
[00:26:55],310 –> [00:26:59],450
her various places and schedules and

596
[00:26:57],410 –> [00:27:02],720
such theatrics be my daughter

597
[00:26:59],450 –> [00:27:04],490
I’m the one who you know runs out to

598
[00:27:02],720 –> [00:27:07],310
menards at eight in the morning to go

599
[00:27:04],490 –> [00:27:11],270
pick up posts for the guy who’s putting

600
[00:27:07],310 –> [00:27:14],120
in our this and replacing the fence that

601
[00:27:11],270 –> [00:27:17],300
are our other house on the guy who

602
[00:27:14],120 –> [00:27:17],989
washes addition I I cook all of our

603
[00:27:17],300 –> [00:27:23],930
meals

604
[00:27:17],990 –> [00:27:25],730
I you know I’m that guy good it ok i

605
[00:27:23],930 –> [00:27:27],980
mean a lot of ways you know my work

606
[00:27:25],730 –> [00:27:31],310
allows me to do that because it’s a very

607
[00:27:27],980 –> [00:27:34],580
kind of solitary homebody sort of sort

608
[00:27:31],310 –> [00:27:37],429
of position but a lot of other ways what

609
[00:27:34],580 –> [00:27:40],460
it means is that i’m doing you know

610
[00:27:37],430 –> [00:27:42],650
she’s working a more than full-time job

611
[00:27:40],460 –> [00:27:44],750
and I’m doing all the other stuff that

612
[00:27:42],650 –> [00:27:47],30
can’t get done otherwise because of the

613
[00:27:44],750 –> [00:27:48],380
head so you touched on a little bit

614
[00:27:47],30 –> [00:27:49],940
before but how did your dream of

615
[00:27:48],380 –> [00:27:52],460
becoming a writer come about

616
[00:27:49],940 –> [00:27:57],470
mm well i mean i’ve been writing for

617
[00:27:52],460 –> [00:27:59],690
most of my life I actually published a

618
[00:27:57],470 –> [00:28:02],90
really horrible book of poetry that will

619
[00:27:59],690 –> [00:28:03],980
never see the light of day beyond the

620
[00:28:02],90 –> [00:28:07],699
solitary copy that I

621
[00:28:03],980 –> [00:28:12],80
no to be in existence downstairs in my

622
[00:28:07],700 –> [00:28:13],580
basement buried deep i might add because

623
[00:28:12],80 –> [00:28:16],699
it really is that bad and that

624
[00:28:13],580 –> [00:28:20],000
embarrassing but I was 16 and full of

625
[00:28:16],700 –> [00:28:22],130
angst and you know like any thanks

626
[00:28:20],000 –> [00:28:23],419
written sixteen-year-old writer you

627
[00:28:22],130 –> [00:28:26],750
write a lot of X written

628
[00:28:23],419 –> [00:28:28],730
sixteen-year-old poetry but I figured

629
[00:28:26],750 –> [00:28:30],830
out a way to self publish it

630
[00:28:28],730 –> [00:28:34],669
my grandmother actually had published

631
[00:28:30],830 –> [00:28:37],610
three books and so I knew a small press

632
[00:28:34],669 –> [00:28:39],500
publisher and through my grandmother and

633
[00:28:37],610 –> [00:28:41],990
you know my grandmother helped me talk

634
[00:28:39],500 –> [00:28:44],240
to him about publishing this little book

635
[00:28:41],990 –> [00:28:47],480
of poetry for you basically a vanity

636
[00:28:44],240 –> [00:28:49],970
project that i got like 200 copies up

637
[00:28:47],480 –> [00:28:54],500
and sold them for like five bucks apiece

638
[00:28:49],970 –> [00:28:56],870
and it was II just you know just a very

639
[00:28:54],500 –> [00:29:00],650
arrogant sixteen-year-old thing to do

640
[00:28:56],870 –> [00:29:05],299
but i want to think that I was well

641
[00:29:00],650 –> [00:29:07],220
ahead of the self-publishing curve 25-30

642
[00:29:05],299 –> [00:29:10],490
years ahead of it in fact so I mean

643
[00:29:07],220 –> [00:29:14],270
that’s something that I’ve done for very

644
[00:29:10],490 –> [00:29:18],890
long time i used to as a young man

645
[00:29:14],270 –> [00:29:21],290
publish a magazine that with a friend we

646
[00:29:18],890 –> [00:29:22],850
would write up put out there sending

647
[00:29:21],290 –> [00:29:24],889
other friends and family and stuff like

648
[00:29:22],850 –> [00:29:28],250
that you know as soon as the internet

649
[00:29:24],890 –> [00:29:29],960
came along I you know immediately was

650
[00:29:28],250 –> [00:29:32],870
thinking about ologies how can i use

651
[00:29:29],960 –> [00:29:34],700
this to write when their blogs and you

652
[00:29:32],870 –> [00:29:38],120
know I’ve been doing my blog for a long

653
[00:29:34],700 –> [00:29:41],330
time I was working you know at the time

654
[00:29:38],120 –> [00:29:43],309
i actually was able to make the leap

655
[00:29:41],330 –> [00:29:46],10
you know i was working at Carleton

656
[00:29:43],309 –> [00:29:48],410
College Charleston’s a private four-year

657
[00:29:46],10 –> [00:29:51],980
liberal arts school school about 50

658
[00:29:48],410 –> [00:29:54],620
miles south of the twin cities area it’s

659
[00:29:51],980 –> [00:29:57],799
a really really good at really expensive

660
[00:29:54],620 –> [00:30:01],340
school like sixty thousand dollars a

661
[00:29:57],799 –> [00:30:04],10
year note no joke but let’s just say

662
[00:30:01],340 –> [00:30:07],639
that if you come out with a degree from

663
[00:30:04],10 –> [00:30:10],520
Carlton Deacon you know it it’s it’s

664
[00:30:07],640 –> [00:30:11],970
like one of the Midwest Ivy’s as it were

665
[00:30:10],520 –> [00:30:15],660
is up there with Grinnell

666
[00:30:11],970 –> [00:30:17],850
one and other ones like that so i was

667
[00:30:15],660 –> [00:30:21],60
working Carlton I was kind of their head

668
[00:30:17],850 –> [00:30:24],570
Matt guy there i managed a team of the

669
[00:30:21],60 –> [00:30:26],940
kind of mac expert windows expert and

670
[00:30:24],570 –> [00:30:29],520
kind of a hardware expert the three of

671
[00:30:26],940 –> [00:30:31],470
us were kind of the top level support

672
[00:30:29],520 –> [00:30:34],590
for for the college

673
[00:30:31],470 –> [00:30:36],420
it just so happened that they were

674
[00:30:34],590 –> [00:30:38],879
making some organizational changes

675
[00:30:36],420 –> [00:30:42],570
within the IT department there that was

676
[00:30:38],880 –> [00:30:47],670
going to leave me doing doing work that

677
[00:30:42],570 –> [00:30:51],60
I didn’t want to do because of my

678
[00:30:47],670 –> [00:30:54],540
relationship with my wife and our

679
[00:30:51],60 –> [00:30:57],750
financial abilities without going into

680
[00:30:54],540 –> [00:31:00],810
too much detail it was a situation where

681
[00:30:57],750 –> [00:31:03],900
i didn’t have to work and so basically I

682
[00:31:00],810 –> [00:31:07],350
I told them I said look you know it

683
[00:31:03],900 –> [00:31:09],870
you’re you’re essentially you’re

684
[00:31:07],350 –> [00:31:12],419
changing my job description you’re

685
[00:31:09],870 –> [00:31:13],979
actually eliminating my position and

686
[00:31:12],420 –> [00:31:16],830
creating this new one

687
[00:31:13],980 –> [00:31:19],530
the cats responsibilities that I don’t

688
[00:31:16],830 –> [00:31:22],290
care to do i said so there’s there’s two

689
[00:31:19],530 –> [00:31:24],240
ways we could work this out because i’m

690
[00:31:22],290 –> [00:31:26],100
not going to do that job and since I

691
[00:31:24],240 –> [00:31:28],950
don’t have to work if I don’t want to

692
[00:31:26],100 –> [00:31:30],870
i’m not going to do that job so there’s

693
[00:31:28],950 –> [00:31:33],870
a couple ways we can work this out

694
[00:31:30],870 –> [00:31:36],449
way number one is you’ve effectively

695
[00:31:33],870 –> [00:31:37],350
eliminating my position thus laying me

696
[00:31:36],450 –> [00:31:40],590
off

697
[00:31:37],350 –> [00:31:44],699
thus I could collect unemployment which

698
[00:31:40],590 –> [00:31:46],260
perfectly fine by me or I have a

699
[00:31:44],700 –> [00:31:48],900
daughter about to be born

700
[00:31:46],260 –> [00:31:50],160
you have 12 weeks of maternity paid

701
[00:31:48],900 –> [00:31:51],840
paternity leave

702
[00:31:50],160 –> [00:31:53],850
I could just take those 12 weeks on hand

703
[00:31:51],840 –> [00:31:58],919
in my resignation at the end of it and

704
[00:31:53],850 –> [00:32:00],810
that’s what that’s what I did because

705
[00:31:58],920 –> [00:32:03],510
you know I talked with Bethenny about it

706
[00:32:00],810 –> [00:32:04],560
and Bethany was like well you know we’re

707
[00:32:03],510 –> [00:32:07],800
in a good place

708
[00:32:04],560 –> [00:32:11],159
Beatrix is about to be born will you do

709
[00:32:07],800 –> [00:32:14],909
we were talking about amy was a hour

710
[00:32:11],160 –> [00:32:16],260
commute each way to work and so there

711
[00:32:14],910 –> [00:32:18],270
were times when I wouldn’t get out of

712
[00:32:16],260 –> [00:32:21],000
work until 6 630 I wouldn’t be getting

713
[00:32:18],270 –> [00:32:22],920
home till seven seven-thirty here I come

714
[00:32:21],000 –> [00:32:23],299
along with a brand new daughter that I

715
[00:32:22],920 –> [00:32:25],999
want to

716
[00:32:23],299 –> [00:32:28],190
spend more time with I mean there was

717
[00:32:25],999 –> [00:32:31],610
that just wasn’t going to work anyway

718
[00:32:28],190 –> [00:32:34],190
I’m and so you know Bethenny was like

719
[00:32:31],610 –> [00:32:36],469
hey if you want to you know take a stab

720
[00:32:34],190 –> [00:32:38],600
at doing the writing and consulting

721
[00:32:36],470 –> [00:32:41],269
thing this is a perfect time to do it

722
[00:32:38],600 –> [00:32:42],498
full time and so that’s what we did

723
[00:32:41],269 –> [00:32:45],289
what you kind of lost right into the

724
[00:32:42],499 –> [00:32:46],850
next question which is how was your

725
[00:32:45],289 –> [00:32:48],799
dream of writing received by your family

726
[00:32:46],850 –> [00:32:50],809
it seems like you’re you know growing up

727
[00:32:48],799 –> [00:32:53],299
your family was very supportive of you

728
[00:32:50],809 –> [00:32:55],428
being a writer yeah well in and that’s

729
[00:32:53],299 –> [00:32:59],59
because I come from arts family my mom

730
[00:32:55],429 –> [00:33:01],309
was in theater arm and professor at the

731
[00:32:59],59 –> [00:33:03],259
theater so she was a professor at the

732
[00:33:01],309 –> [00:33:06],440
University of Iowa for many many years

733
[00:33:03],259 –> [00:33:09],619
been was very active in theatres around

734
[00:33:06],440 –> [00:33:12],109
the Twin Cities and twenties has a it’s

735
[00:33:09],619 –> [00:33:14],899
is number two in in a in the country for

736
[00:33:12],109 –> [00:33:18],320
theater right behind New York slightly

737
[00:33:14],899 –> [00:33:20],840
bigger than chicago and so yeah theater

738
[00:33:18],320 –> [00:33:23],629
is really big here she was an actress

739
[00:33:20],840 –> [00:33:27],80
and director my grandmother her mother

740
[00:33:23],629 –> [00:33:29],748
was a concert pianist my dad is a

741
[00:33:27],80 –> [00:33:33],889
freelance audio engineer and has been

742
[00:33:29],749 –> [00:33:36],950
working for himself for 30-40 years so

743
[00:33:33],889 –> [00:33:41],928
yeah I come from a family of artists and

744
[00:33:36],950 –> [00:33:46],340
least one engineer who are used to

745
[00:33:41],929 –> [00:33:49],460
non-traditional jobs of ways of income

746
[00:33:46],340 –> [00:33:50],570
ways of making it although both my mom

747
[00:33:49],460 –> [00:33:52],999
and grandmother were very much

748
[00:33:50],570 –> [00:33:55],668
establishment after a bit my mom wasn’t

749
[00:33:52],999 –> [00:33:57],889
at first my dad still to this day

750
[00:33:55],669 –> [00:33:59],840
continues to he lives in DC and does

751
[00:33:57],889 –> [00:34:01],340
freelance audio engineering eastward for

752
[00:33:59],840 –> [00:34:04],39
himself for years and years and years

753
[00:34:01],340 –> [00:34:05],779
and years so so yeah it is it’s not

754
[00:34:04],39 –> [00:34:07],700
something that was foreign to my to my

755
[00:34:05],779 –> [00:34:11],329
family and certainly wasn’t for into my

756
[00:34:07],700 –> [00:34:13],280
wife who had recently made a similarly /

757
[00:34:11],329 –> [00:34:15],139
self so what steps did you take to get

758
[00:34:13],280 –> [00:34:18],349
started once you’re like okay now I’m

759
[00:34:15],139 –> [00:34:21],710
out of a job I got this kid we I don’t

760
[00:34:18],349 –> [00:34:25],339
have to be working a go

761
[00:34:21],710 –> [00:34:29],449
well I mean what was nice was I had had

762
[00:34:25],339 –> [00:34:30],259
my consulting business for a while for a

763
[00:34:29],449 –> [00:34:32],989
long while

764
[00:34:30],260 –> [00:34:35],510
before I met Bethenny but I had always

765
[00:34:32],989 –> [00:34:38],449
done that kind of on the side i did try

766
[00:34:35],510 –> [00:34:41],750
to do it as my full-time thing for one

767
[00:34:38],449 –> [00:34:43],40
year and that year was actually that was

768
[00:34:41],750 –> [00:34:45],530
the year when i was having to make

769
[00:34:43],40 –> [00:34:47],779
choices decisions about my my Neil

770
[00:34:45],530 –> [00:34:51],200
planning for the sake of my children

771
[00:34:47],780 –> [00:34:53],870
uh-huh i literally made in this is an

772
[00:34:51],199 –> [00:34:58],460
exact figure this was my gross for the

773
[00:34:53],870 –> [00:35:01],520
entire year 18650 five dollars that was

774
[00:34:58],460 –> [00:35:04],520
my gross for an entire year as a

775
[00:35:01],520 –> [00:35:06],410
full-time single father so I just want

776
[00:35:04],520 –> [00:35:08],390
to put that into perspective perspective

777
[00:35:06],410 –> [00:35:12],109
and let that sink in a little bit

778
[00:35:08],390 –> [00:35:15],80
because that’s so far below the poverty

779
[00:35:12],110 –> [00:35:17],930
level that is a mystery as to even to me

780
[00:35:15],80 –> [00:35:21],950
to this day as to how we didn’t end up

781
[00:35:17],930 –> [00:35:23],960
homeless and the only way is the help of

782
[00:35:21],950 –> [00:35:28],850
family and friends you know especially

783
[00:35:23],960 –> [00:35:31],880
friends who would know my situation but

784
[00:35:28],850 –> [00:35:35],600
would never make me feel feel bad or

785
[00:35:31],880 –> [00:35:39],890
like a failure and would do things like

786
[00:35:35],600 –> [00:35:42],740
you know invite us over to dinner

787
[00:35:39],890 –> [00:35:44],720
knowing that ok terrific that’s you know

788
[00:35:42],740 –> [00:35:47],000
food that I don’t you know that’s a meal

789
[00:35:44],720 –> [00:35:49],910
I don’t have to buy right things like

790
[00:35:47],000 –> [00:35:52],10
that but it also helped that my own and

791
[00:35:49],910 –> [00:35:54],529
by that time I had really worked hard to

792
[00:35:52],10 –> [00:35:57],380
reduce my overhead before i give that a

793
[00:35:54],530 –> [00:35:59],780
shot but at the end of that I gotta yeah

794
[00:35:57],380 –> [00:36:00],440
I got the offer from Carlton and went to

795
[00:35:59],780 –> [00:36:02],900
work there

796
[00:36:00],440 –> [00:36:06],20
Carlton had known paid me more than

797
[00:36:02],900 –> [00:36:08],450
fairly had tremendous benefits

798
[00:36:06],20 –> [00:36:12],140
I mean really good so there was that

799
[00:36:08],450 –> [00:36:14],509
yeah so basically i was already in a

800
[00:36:12],140 –> [00:36:17],450
good position because i had i had this

801
[00:36:14],510 –> [00:36:20],000
existing business i had the client base

802
[00:36:17],450 –> [00:36:23],210
for it it was just a matter of building

803
[00:36:20],000 –> [00:36:24],620
on that already existing base and so for

804
[00:36:23],210 –> [00:36:26],780
a lot of people that want to do this

805
[00:36:24],620 –> [00:36:29],900
it’s not a matter of just quitting your

806
[00:36:26],780 –> [00:36:31],280
job and walking often watering into this

807
[00:36:29],900 –> [00:36:33],650
giant pile of cash

808
[00:36:31],280 –> [00:36:36],890
it’s actually sometimes working two jobs

809
[00:36:33],650 –> [00:36:38],930
or three whatever doing whatever it is

810
[00:36:36],890 –> [00:36:41],990
that you’re doing on the side for a

811
[00:36:38],930 –> [00:36:43],609
while to kind of build up that that base

812
[00:36:41],990 –> [00:36:46],640
that clientele that

813
[00:36:43],610 –> [00:36:49],100
you know whatever it takes you know if

814
[00:36:46],640 –> [00:36:53],150
you look around the internet at you know

815
[00:36:49],100 –> [00:36:55],910
guys who are you know successful

816
[00:36:53],150 –> [00:36:59],720
bloggers you know making money off their

817
[00:36:55],910 –> [00:37:02],180
blogs they didn’t do that overnight good

818
[00:36:59],720 –> [00:37:05],390
they were working real jobs many of them

819
[00:37:02],180 –> [00:37:07],220
are working real jobs and doing that on

820
[00:37:05],390 –> [00:37:11],540
the side and trying to figure out a way

821
[00:37:07],220 –> [00:37:14],89
to to flip that switch as it were and so

822
[00:37:11],540 –> [00:37:17],540
yeah but that I mean that’s part of it i

823
[00:37:14],90 –> [00:37:19],190
already had this existing base upon

824
[00:37:17],540 –> [00:37:19],790
which the bill that was just a matter of

825
[00:37:19],190 –> [00:37:21],110
building it

826
[00:37:19],790 –> [00:37:27],380
anybody ever tell you you should be an

827
[00:37:21],110 –> [00:37:30],230
accountant yeah oh no no no I I really

828
[00:37:27],380 –> [00:37:32],300
shouldn’t be but my wife my that’s part

829
[00:37:30],230 –> [00:37:34],880
of what my wife brings to the table so

830
[00:37:32],300 –> [00:37:37],820
she manages the money for our business

831
[00:37:34],880 –> [00:37:40],130
and cheek in and for several small

832
[00:37:37],820 –> [00:37:43],70
nonprofit organizations around town

833
[00:37:40],130 –> [00:37:45],920
yeah let’s just say that I’ve read a lot

834
[00:37:43],70 –> [00:37:48],410
about money and I have been through a

835
[00:37:45],920 –> [00:37:50],150
lot when my first wife and I got

836
[00:37:48],410 –> [00:37:54],140
divorced see it

837
[00:37:50],150 –> [00:37:57],380
I i used to be i don’t think I was ever

838
[00:37:54],140 –> [00:38:00],49
really bad at money i guess i was I kind

839
[00:37:57],380 –> [00:38:03],470
of if i had money i would spend it as a

840
[00:38:00],50 –> [00:38:05],870
young man I kind of was bad with being

841
[00:38:03],470 –> [00:38:08],569
able to save money and being able plan

842
[00:38:05],870 –> [00:38:10],910
and things like that and so because of

843
[00:38:08],570 –> [00:38:13],460
that i thought my first wife was really

844
[00:38:10],910 –> [00:38:15],20
good with money and i literally would

845
[00:38:13],460 –> [00:38:16],940
just give my paycheck to her i would

846
[00:38:15],20 –> [00:38:19],400
literally sign it over to her I didn’t

847
[00:38:16],940 –> [00:38:21],260
even want my name on a bank account i

848
[00:38:19],400 –> [00:38:23],60
didn’t have any credit cards in my name

849
[00:38:21],260 –> [00:38:25],790
on a bank account i just want to give

850
[00:38:23],60 –> [00:38:27],380
all made her just let her manage it and

851
[00:38:25],790 –> [00:38:31],430
then if I needed money she would give me

852
[00:38:27],380 –> [00:38:33],260
money blah blah blah right well when I

853
[00:38:31],430 –> [00:38:37],879
found out was that she wasn’t all that

854
[00:38:33],260 –> [00:38:41],120
great with money and by the time of our

855
[00:38:37],880 –> [00:38:42],950
divorce we were actually forty thousand

856
[00:38:41],120 –> [00:38:47],569
dollars in debt that we had to figure

857
[00:38:42],950 –> [00:38:50],149
out because of the fact that i literally

858
[00:38:47],570 –> [00:38:52],10
just sign my paycheck over to her and

859
[00:38:50],150 –> [00:38:54],330
let her manage things and didn’t really

860
[00:38:52],10 –> [00:38:57],180
know the status of things

861
[00:38:54],330 –> [00:39:02],9
it kind of came out of our divorce that

862
[00:38:57],180 –> [00:39:03],990
she would assume all of that but of

863
[00:39:02],10 –> [00:39:05],610
course because my name was on some

864
[00:39:03],990 –> [00:39:08],69
things and whatnot my credit was

865
[00:39:05],610 –> [00:39:10],110
virtually destroyed so I couldn’t get a

866
[00:39:08],70 –> [00:39:12],210
credit card even if I’d wanted to I

867
[00:39:10],110 –> [00:39:14],250
couldn’t you know and so I have to

868
[00:39:12],210 –> [00:39:16],410
figure out because she wanted out she

869
[00:39:14],250 –> [00:39:17],820
wanted she wanted to not be married

870
[00:39:16],410 –> [00:39:20],640
anymore she didn’t want to be a

871
[00:39:17],820 –> [00:39:23],40
full-time mom anymore i got the house i

872
[00:39:20],640 –> [00:39:25],290
got the car I got kids I got the

873
[00:39:23],40 –> [00:39:27],960
furniture I I mean she just wanted to

874
[00:39:25],290 –> [00:39:30],150
walk away I’m like fine if you want out

875
[00:39:27],960 –> [00:39:32],790
that’s terrific take your debt with you

876
[00:39:30],150 –> [00:39:35],280
and she did you know kudos to her for

877
[00:39:32],790 –> [00:39:37],140
you know I don’t know growing a pair

878
[00:39:35],280 –> [00:39:41],100
Manning up

879
[00:39:37],140 –> [00:39:43],529
yeah but I did go there

880
[00:39:41],100 –> [00:39:45],900
yes so I kind of walk out of it in a

881
[00:39:43],530 –> [00:39:49],440
good place i didn’t have this big large

882
[00:39:45],900 –> [00:39:52],290
debt but in a bad place which turned out

883
[00:39:49],440 –> [00:39:54],300
to be a good place and I couldn’t accrue

884
[00:39:52],290 –> [00:39:58],290
more I couldn’t get a credit card to

885
[00:39:54],300 –> [00:40:01],290
accrue more debt and so I had I was

886
[00:39:58],290 –> [00:40:03],390
forced to work with what I had

887
[00:40:01],290 –> [00:40:05],400
which you know at the time I did have a

888
[00:40:03],390 –> [00:40:07],410
job when that happened you know i have

889
[00:40:05],400 –> [00:40:09],600
had a regular paycheck and whatever and

890
[00:40:07],410 –> [00:40:11],910
that was good it was certainly enough to

891
[00:40:09],600 –> [00:40:15],150
kind of pay the mortgage and you know

892
[00:40:11],910 –> [00:40:17],310
pay for food and gas and other expenses

893
[00:40:15],150 –> [00:40:20],760
it wasn’t a whole lot it wasn’t but it

894
[00:40:17],310 –> [00:40:22],980
was certainly enough to sustain my two

895
[00:40:20],760 –> [00:40:25],680
sons and I and she was giving me a

896
[00:40:22],980 –> [00:40:27],570
little bit extra and child support not

897
[00:40:25],680 –> [00:40:30],540
what she was supposed to be by the way

898
[00:40:27],570 –> [00:40:32],250
she never paid me what she was supposed

899
[00:40:30],540 –> [00:40:34],740
to and child support but that’s another

900
[00:40:32],250 –> [00:40:37],650
story and all water under the bridge now

901
[00:40:34],740 –> [00:40:40],649
as i was getting a ton of help that way

902
[00:40:37],650 –> [00:40:42],840
but it was something so I was forced to

903
[00:40:40],650 –> [00:40:44],460
live within my means and figure it out

904
[00:40:42],840 –> [00:40:46],140
and work with what I had

905
[00:40:44],460 –> [00:40:48],570
there were some books that really helped

906
[00:40:46],140 –> [00:40:51],720
me one of them being your money or your

907
[00:40:48],570 –> [00:40:55],380
life highly recommend that book that

908
[00:40:51],720 –> [00:40:59],279
book most of what I think about money

909
[00:40:55],380 –> [00:41:02],390
today and how I approach it and how I

910
[00:40:59],280 –> [00:41:05],329
approach my relationship with it

911
[00:41:02],390 –> [00:41:06],950
can be traced back to that book so no I

912
[00:41:05],329 –> [00:41:09],859
shouldn’t be an accountant it just so

913
[00:41:06],950 –> [00:41:12],319
happens that I’ve had to learn a lot of

914
[00:41:09],859 –> [00:41:14],450
what I’ve had to learn the hard way and

915
[00:41:12],319 –> [00:41:15],109
think that’s a perfectly good school to

916
[00:41:14],450 –> [00:41:17],598
go to

917
[00:41:15],109 –> [00:41:20],630
so I mean obviously you’ve had a a lot

918
[00:41:17],599 –> [00:41:22],700
of roadblocks in life but let’s talk

919
[00:41:20],630 –> [00:41:27],260
about specifically with writing

920
[00:41:22],700 –> [00:41:30],710
well I’m lucky I’m really lucky we live

921
[00:41:27],260 –> [00:41:33],650
in an age where we’re writer can

922
[00:41:30],710 –> [00:41:34],819
certainly take matters into their own

923
[00:41:33],650 –> [00:41:38],420
hands

924
[00:41:34],819 –> [00:41:40],759
we’re no longer in this age where you

925
[00:41:38],420 –> [00:41:43],99
write this thing and then in order to

926
[00:41:40],760 –> [00:41:45],230
put it out into the world you need some

927
[00:41:43],99 –> [00:41:47],930
blessing from some publisher big or

928
[00:41:45],230 –> [00:41:51],349
small you need someone else to buy into

929
[00:41:47],930 –> [00:41:55],279
it and to sell it and to market it and

930
[00:41:51],349 –> [00:41:57],319
to and to grow an audience for you that

931
[00:41:55],279 –> [00:42:01],819
you have all the tools at your disposal

932
[00:41:57],319 –> [00:42:04],609
to grow your own audience and then once

933
[00:42:01],819 –> [00:42:08],000
you have grown that audience give them

934
[00:42:04],609 –> [00:42:12],740
things that they that will help them

935
[00:42:08],000 –> [00:42:17],599
things that will entertain them things

936
[00:42:12],740 –> [00:42:19],700
that that matter to them and then charge

937
[00:42:17],599 –> [00:42:22],579
them for those things because they are

938
[00:42:19],700 –> [00:42:24],769
happy to pay for them just as we are

939
[00:42:22],579 –> [00:42:27],140
happy to pay for the things that do

940
[00:42:24],769 –> [00:42:30],49
those things for us right

941
[00:42:27],140 –> [00:42:32],720
I’m more than happy to pay for just

942
[00:42:30],49 –> [00:42:35],990
about anything that Neil Gaiman puts out

943
[00:42:32],720 –> [00:42:39],288
or that my friend Kelley McCauley puts

944
[00:42:35],990 –> [00:42:42],558
out or that my email that you know

945
[00:42:39],289 –> [00:42:46],640
insert author that you like here puts

946
[00:42:42],559 –> [00:42:49],670
out why well because I get that much if

947
[00:42:46],640 –> [00:42:51],710
not more return on value from that they

948
[00:42:49],670 –> [00:42:55],39
entertain me or they helped me in some

949
[00:42:51],710 –> [00:42:56],690
way and so yeah we live in this really

950
[00:42:55],39 –> [00:43:01],130
unique age where there really is no

951
[00:42:56],690 –> [00:43:03],200
excuse for a writer not to make money i

952
[00:43:01],130 –> [00:43:05],569
think that sounds pretty serious about

953
[00:43:03],200 –> [00:43:08],240
that I don’t mean to sound like papa

954
[00:43:05],569 –> [00:43:09],9
sore loser looking for you to do it no

955
[00:43:08],240 –> [00:43:11],770
not

956
[00:43:09],10 –> [00:43:14],320
no you can you can write something and

957
[00:43:11],770 –> [00:43:16],660
you can sell it to one person and boom

958
[00:43:14],320 –> [00:43:18],700
there you go you’ve you’ve now made you

959
[00:43:16],660 –> [00:43:20],379
now have ten dollars more five dollars

960
[00:43:18],700 –> [00:43:22],870
more two dollars more whatever you price

961
[00:43:20],380 –> [00:43:24],340
you put on it then you had yesterday and

962
[00:43:22],870 –> [00:43:25],29
guess what now you’re a professional

963
[00:43:24],340 –> [00:43:26],980
writer

964
[00:43:25],30 –> [00:43:29],710
yeah i mean that’s that’s really honest

965
[00:43:26],980 –> [00:43:32],290
a funny but it’s it’s interesting that

966
[00:43:29],710 –> [00:43:35],50
you say that because it in the face of

967
[00:43:32],290 –> [00:43:38],20
newspapers falling out of the sky

968
[00:43:35],50 –> [00:43:39],790
yeah and and publishers not really doing

969
[00:43:38],20 –> [00:43:41],560
and I’ve talked to other friends of mine

970
[00:43:39],790 –> [00:43:43],240
and basically they’ve told me that

971
[00:43:41],560 –> [00:43:44],770
publishers don’t do anything that they

972
[00:43:43],240 –> [00:43:46],359
don’t expect you to already do for

973
[00:43:44],770 –> [00:43:46],780
yourself except they get a 30-percent

974
[00:43:46],360 –> [00:43:49],390
cut

975
[00:43:46],780 –> [00:43:51],430
yeah yeah yeah and that’s on top of the

976
[00:43:49],390 –> [00:43:53],710
thirty percent cut the Amazon and

977
[00:43:51],430 –> [00:43:55],750
whoever else is gonna take from your

978
[00:43:53],710 –> [00:44:00],460
ebooks or your you know I mean this it’s

979
[00:43:55],750 –> [00:44:03],520
ya know it’s yeah at this is in this day

980
[00:44:00],460 –> [00:44:05],620
and age there are very few reasons why I

981
[00:44:03],520 –> [00:44:09],190
would ever tell anyone to go with a

982
[00:44:05],620 –> [00:44:11],830
major publisher and i would say that

983
[00:44:09],190 –> [00:44:16],390
you’re better off but let me just put it

984
[00:44:11],830 –> [00:44:19],480
this way of the two physical books that

985
[00:44:16],390 –> [00:44:22],569
I have done I still keep the majority of

986
[00:44:19],480 –> [00:44:24],910
that money there is not a single writer

987
[00:44:22],570 –> [00:44:27],130
that I am aware of working for a major

988
[00:44:24],910 –> [00:44:29],620
publisher writing for a major publisher

989
[00:44:27],130 –> [00:44:34],630
that can say the same they can say that

990
[00:44:29],620 –> [00:44:37],120
they keep the majority of the net of

991
[00:44:34],630 –> [00:44:40],240
their book sales they make money other

992
[00:44:37],120 –> [00:44:42],490
ways take a look at Stephen King Stephen

993
[00:44:40],240 –> [00:44:44],200
King probably me my guess would be is

994
[00:44:42],490 –> [00:44:47],200
that he’s got one of the best book deals

995
[00:44:44],200 –> [00:44:51],700
in the in the business and my bet is is

996
[00:44:47],200 –> [00:44:56],649
that he does not keep the the the the

997
[00:44:51],700 –> [00:44:58],480
large slice of the sale of every book

998
[00:44:56],650 –> [00:45:01],660
that even if we’re talking even if he

999
[00:44:58],480 –> [00:45:04],120
gets 49-percent I get more of a

1000
[00:45:01],660 –> [00:45:09],759
percentage of mine they are now that’s

1001
[00:45:04],120 –> [00:45:11],710
great for him because he that’s not

1002
[00:45:09],760 –> [00:45:14],410
worry is making his money right

1003
[00:45:11],710 –> [00:45:17],650
he’s making his money in a lot of other

1004
[00:45:14],410 –> [00:45:20],620
ways not the least of which is movie

1005
[00:45:17],650 –> [00:45:22],360
deals right you know with the mat some

1006
[00:45:20],620 –> [00:45:24],640
money that he gets to keep

1007
[00:45:22],360 –> [00:45:26],440
completely the same thing is true for I

1008
[00:45:24],640 –> [00:45:29],170
mean musicians right musicians aren’t

1009
[00:45:26],440 –> [00:45:31],480
making money off of off of mp3 sales or

1010
[00:45:29],170 –> [00:45:33],280
album sales or CD sales they don’t think

1011
[00:45:31],480 –> [00:45:34],930
that they have made money like that for

1012
[00:45:33],280 –> [00:45:36],910
years right

1013
[00:45:34],930 –> [00:45:39],549
those things are promotional tools to

1014
[00:45:36],910 –> [00:45:42],250
sell other things right the they’re

1015
[00:45:39],550 –> [00:45:45],580
there to sell tickets to the tour there

1016
[00:45:42],250 –> [00:45:48],460
to sell you know they’re did there to

1017
[00:45:45],580 –> [00:45:51],340
sell other things they’re not to sell it

1018
[00:45:48],460 –> [00:45:53],290
is not about the the music itself is

1019
[00:45:51],340 –> [00:45:56],200
about all the other things that they can

1020
[00:45:53],290 –> [00:45:58],390
make money off of that they get to keep

1021
[00:45:56],200 –> [00:46:02],20
britney spears doesn’t make a ton of

1022
[00:45:58],390 –> [00:46:04],629
money off of the up mp3 cells but you

1023
[00:46:02],20 –> [00:46:06],640
know her residency in Las Vegas is meted

1024
[00:46:04],630 –> [00:46:08],560
her something like 18 million dollars in

1025
[00:46:06],640 –> [00:46:13],000
3-4 months right

1026
[00:46:08],560 –> [00:46:16],240
yep you got it i’ll do i’ll take that

1027
[00:46:13],000 –> [00:46:17],890
deal all day long so yeah I mean that’s

1028
[00:46:16],240 –> [00:46:20],229
basically what it comes down to writers

1029
[00:46:17],890 –> [00:46:22],629
you know who worked for major publishers

1030
[00:46:20],230 –> [00:46:24],40
are a lot of cases not making money off

1031
[00:46:22],630 –> [00:46:26],530
of those blogs what they’re making money

1032
[00:46:24],40 –> [00:46:31],690
off of is the other things come out of

1033
[00:46:26],530 –> [00:46:33],580
that you know that said one of the many

1034
[00:46:31],690 –> [00:46:36],700
reasons why work with a very small

1035
[00:46:33],580 –> [00:46:40],390
publisher first today press is a

1036
[00:46:36],700 –> [00:46:42],910
longtime friend of mine who cut me a

1037
[00:46:40],390 –> [00:46:45],490
deal that is more than more than fair

1038
[00:46:42],910 –> [00:46:49],89
you know and the other books that I’ve

1039
[00:46:45],490 –> [00:46:51],339
self-published I I get to keep a big

1040
[00:46:49],90 –> [00:46:53],920
chunk of that change as it should be and

1041
[00:46:51],340 –> [00:46:55],450
any writer can and seriously if you with

1042
[00:46:53],920 –> [00:46:57],700
you want to be a writer and you’ve

1043
[00:46:55],450 –> [00:47:00],129
written something you do the work you

1044
[00:46:57],700 –> [00:47:03],100
put it out there for people to enjoy you

1045
[00:47:00],130 –> [00:47:06],520
build an audience through that you know

1046
[00:47:03],100 –> [00:47:09],69
that is appreciative of that and is

1047
[00:47:06],520 –> [00:47:10],509
willing to buy some of that work from

1048
[00:47:09],70 –> [00:47:13],330
you so I mean while we’re on the topic

1049
[00:47:10],510 –> [00:47:15],370
of books but let’s talk about your books

1050
[00:47:13],330 –> [00:47:17],200
ok well i mean i have one sitting in

1051
[00:47:15],370 –> [00:47:18],640
front of me called keeping it straight

1052
[00:47:17],200 –> [00:47:20],710
well you have another book I haven’t

1053
[00:47:18],640 –> [00:47:23],259
gotten it yet yep it’s all the enough

1054
[00:47:20],710 –> [00:47:25],390
that’s another kind of physical book

1055
[00:47:23],260 –> [00:47:28],540
I’ve got three other books that are

1056
[00:47:25],390 –> [00:47:30],69
lesser than those let’s just let’s just

1057
[00:47:28],540 –> [00:47:32],140
say that but they’re also lesser price

1058
[00:47:30],70 –> [00:47:32],930
to with the exception of one but you go

1059
[00:47:32],140 –> [00:47:34],940
ahead

1060
[00:47:32],930 –> [00:47:37],40
that’s so keeping a straight keeping a

1061
[00:47:34],940 –> [00:47:39],950
straight was my first actual published

1062
[00:47:37],40 –> [00:47:45],230
book discounting that bad book of poetry

1063
[00:47:39],950 –> [00:47:47],779
that did ya keeping a straight is a kind

1064
[00:47:45],230 –> [00:47:53],630
of play collection of essays written

1065
[00:47:47],780 –> [00:47:57],140
over a several year period that covers a

1066
[00:47:53],630 –> [00:47:59],869
wide range of topic each one of them

1067
[00:47:57],140 –> [00:48:02],868
with some nugget of wisdom that may

1068
[00:47:59],869 –> [00:48:04],880
brighten your day may make a little bit

1069
[00:48:02],869 –> [00:48:07],99
smarter may help you out in some areas

1070
[00:48:04],880 –> [00:48:09],140
of life who knows there’s a little bit

1071
[00:48:07],99 –> [00:48:11],450
in there about productivity there’s a

1072
[00:48:09],140 –> [00:48:14],569
there’s some personal stories in there

1073
[00:48:11],450 –> [00:48:18],410
there’s yeah there’s some stuff about

1074
[00:48:14],569 –> [00:48:20],720
mindfulness and minimalism and you know

1075
[00:48:18],410 –> [00:48:23],118
that was kind of a kind of a hodgepodge

1076
[00:48:20],720 –> [00:48:24],919
of various things that just kind of all

1077
[00:48:23],119 –> [00:48:26],930
fit and work together somehow

1078
[00:48:24],920 –> [00:48:29],210
yes you know I definitely enjoyed

1079
[00:48:26],930 –> [00:48:30],558
reading it is definitely very inspiring

1080
[00:48:29],210 –> [00:48:32],930
for me and i would i would recommend

1081
[00:48:30],559 –> [00:48:35],869
anybody that was interested in finding a

1082
[00:48:32],930 –> [00:48:37],640
bunch of stories short stories the the

1083
[00:48:35],869 –> [00:48:40],280
pretty much all one page aren’t a i

1084
[00:48:37],640 –> [00:48:43],490
think yeah they’re mostly stops and one

1085
[00:48:40],280 –> [00:48:45],410
to two pages here and I mean they share

1086
[00:48:43],490 –> [00:48:47],689
a lot of insights that you may have

1087
[00:48:45],410 –> [00:48:49],819
thought of at some point but it puts it

1088
[00:48:47],690 –> [00:48:52],640
in a such a way that when you read it

1089
[00:48:49],819 –> [00:48:56],599
makes sense and sticks to you

1090
[00:48:52],640 –> [00:48:58],759
yeah I a lot of people ask me one of the

1091
[00:48:56],599 –> [00:49:01],970
hardest questions i struggle with is

1092
[00:48:58],760 –> [00:49:05],30
when people ask me what do you write

1093
[00:49:01],970 –> [00:49:07],40
what do you write about and it’s a very

1094
[00:49:05],30 –> [00:49:09],410
complicated question because I write

1095
[00:49:07],40 –> [00:49:13],880
about life and I write I write about

1096
[00:49:09],410 –> [00:49:17],29
ideas and ways to approach that life and

1097
[00:49:13],880 –> [00:49:19],130
give it value and meaning or i should

1098
[00:49:17],30 –> [00:49:22],450
say respecting the value and meaning

1099
[00:49:19],130 –> [00:49:25],89
that is already there seeing it

1100
[00:49:22],450 –> [00:49:28],990
we’re in otherwise may not appear to you

1101
[00:49:25],89 –> [00:49:31],750
and that’s you know something that’s

1102
[00:49:28],990 –> [00:49:34],750
really difficult to quantify into words

1103
[00:49:31],750 –> [00:49:39],400
or sound bite but I think keeping a

1104
[00:49:34],750 –> [00:49:40],930
straight definitely is one of is is

1105
[00:49:39],400 –> [00:49:43],510
probably of the things I’ve written

1106
[00:49:40],930 –> [00:49:46],960
that’s the thing that most embodies that

1107
[00:49:43],510 –> [00:49:49],180
the kind of breath of stuff that i right

1108
[00:49:46],960 –> [00:49:50],50
about that make sense yeah yeah

1109
[00:49:49],180 –> [00:49:51],759
definitely

1110
[00:49:50],50 –> [00:49:54],820
can you share favorite memory from all

1111
[00:49:51],760 –> [00:49:57],940
your writing so i’m writing this thing

1112
[00:49:54],820 –> [00:50:02],650
right now I’m not even sure what it is

1113
[00:49:57],940 –> [00:50:05],859
it’s an idea that I that I started with

1114
[00:50:02],650 –> [00:50:09],579
20 years ago and it was just an idea but

1115
[00:50:05],859 –> [00:50:12],400
it number one was so i didn’t have a

1116
[00:50:09],579 –> [00:50:16],180
firm grasp of the idea it was just kind

1117
[00:50:12],400 –> [00:50:18],250
of a nugget and so I kind of just put it

1118
[00:50:16],180 –> [00:50:20],410
on the back burner and just kept coming

1119
[00:50:18],250 –> [00:50:22],630
back around this little idea and every

1120
[00:50:20],410 –> [00:50:24],578
time I came back around it would it

1121
[00:50:22],630 –> [00:50:26],890
wouldn’t have a little bit more detail

1122
[00:50:24],579 –> [00:50:30],130
say a little bit more to me about what

1123
[00:50:26],890 –> [00:50:33],129
it wanted to be or i would see something

1124
[00:50:30],130 –> [00:50:35],319
in the news or read something online or

1125
[00:50:33],130 –> [00:50:37],300
somewhere in some magazine or something

1126
[00:50:35],319 –> [00:50:39],490
that would trigger the idea again and

1127
[00:50:37],300 –> [00:50:41],109
add a little bit more to it and I is

1128
[00:50:39],490 –> [00:50:43],810
literally been off and on like that for

1129
[00:50:41],109 –> [00:50:46],000
20 years and I never thought I could

1130
[00:50:43],810 –> [00:50:48],310
write this thing I thought okay this is

1131
[00:50:46],000 –> [00:50:52],510
it’s not my genre is kind of a sci-fi

1132
[00:50:48],310 –> [00:50:55],509
sort of thing that really but kinda not

1133
[00:50:52],510 –> [00:50:58],390
at Syfy friends you know guys that right

1134
[00:50:55],510 –> [00:51:00],609
side like published authors who do

1135
[00:50:58],390 –> [00:51:02],828
sci-fi like I even wood shop it around

1136
[00:51:00],609 –> [00:51:05],529
to them might even say here this idea I

1137
[00:51:02],829 –> [00:51:07],930
have and it’s just this kind of whatever

1138
[00:51:05],530 –> [00:51:10],119
sort of idea let me throw it out there

1139
[00:51:07],930 –> [00:51:11],560
to you and if you want it if you think

1140
[00:51:10],119 –> [00:51:13],660
it’s something if it sparks your

1141
[00:51:11],560 –> [00:51:15],549
interest you should write this because i

1142
[00:51:13],660 –> [00:51:17],950
don’t know if i can do it i don’t think

1143
[00:51:15],550 –> [00:51:19],900
it’s not my my skill set

1144
[00:51:17],950 –> [00:51:21],790
blah blah blah and I would tell them the

1145
[00:51:19],900 –> [00:51:26],20
idea and they go no that’s a great idea

1146
[00:51:21],790 –> [00:51:27],840
that you should write yeah okay i guess

1147
[00:51:26],20 –> [00:51:32],9
i can’t do this

1148
[00:51:27],840 –> [00:51:34],680
and so about almost exactly like four

1149
[00:51:32],10 –> [00:51:37],140
weeks ago now it came to me in a dream

1150
[00:51:34],680 –> [00:51:40],560
the entire thing out of nowhere I

1151
[00:51:37],140 –> [00:51:45],210
suddenly had this dream where i saw this

1152
[00:51:40],560 –> [00:51:48],150
i saw the entire thing and i woke up and

1153
[00:51:45],210 –> [00:51:52],710
i started writing this and it’s consumed

1154
[00:51:48],150 –> [00:51:54],420
me now for weeks and it has i have no

1155
[00:51:52],710 –> [00:51:56],310
idea what it is i don’t know if it’s

1156
[00:51:54],420 –> [00:51:58],530
going to be a book i don’t know if it’s

1157
[00:51:56],310 –> [00:52:00],420
going to be a short story i don’t know

1158
[00:51:58],530 –> [00:52:02],640
if this is something that will ever see

1159
[00:52:00],420 –> [00:52:05],70
the light of day or if i’ll be able to

1160
[00:52:02],640 –> [00:52:08],190
make any money off that I have no idea

1161
[00:52:05],70 –> [00:52:11],610
what it is i just have to write it and

1162
[00:52:08],190 –> [00:52:15],420
so yeah I guess that’s a memory that

1163
[00:52:11],610 –> [00:52:18],30
immediately comes to mind because so

1164
[00:52:15],420 –> [00:52:18],690
much of what I write comes to me already

1165
[00:52:18],30 –> [00:52:20],370
written

1166
[00:52:18],690 –> [00:52:24],000
I know that sounds strange to a lot of

1167
[00:52:20],370 –> [00:52:28],290
people and it’s not like I just know it

1168
[00:52:24],000 –> [00:52:30],990
is I i sit down and like something takes

1169
[00:52:28],290 –> [00:52:32],820
over and it just comes out of me and

1170
[00:52:30],990 –> [00:52:34],140
yeah sure I do some little bit of

1171
[00:52:32],820 –> [00:52:39],90
editing and maybe a little bit of

1172
[00:52:34],140 –> [00:52:40],830
rewording I’m going back but most of it

1173
[00:52:39],90 –> [00:52:43],860
not most of it

1174
[00:52:40],830 –> [00:52:46],110
what you see is a first draft that just

1175
[00:52:43],860 –> [00:52:47],580
came out like that and so what’s

1176
[00:52:46],110 –> [00:52:49],380
interesting I think about about the

1177
[00:52:47],580 –> [00:52:52],290
thing I’m working on now is that that

1178
[00:52:49],380 –> [00:52:54],510
also just came to me but it it actually

1179
[00:52:52],290 –> [00:52:55],710
is getting better as i write it as I

1180
[00:52:54],510 –> [00:52:58],110
actually do the work

1181
[00:52:55],710 –> [00:53:00],780
it’s not coming out just kind of popped

1182
[00:52:58],110 –> [00:53:03],150
onto the page it’s getting better and

1183
[00:53:00],780 –> [00:53:05],880
better and better every time i go back

1184
[00:53:03],150 –> [00:53:07],560
through it and rewrite it so yeah I

1185
[00:53:05],880 –> [00:53:09],420
don’t I didn’t mean to go off on a

1186
[00:53:07],560 –> [00:53:11],220
tangent there but I’m calculus about

1187
[00:53:09],420 –> [00:53:13],650
obsessed with it right now

1188
[00:53:11],220 –> [00:53:16],259
now that’s fine I i like the fact that

1189
[00:53:13],650 –> [00:53:18],480
you shared that so if you know if I can

1190
[00:53:16],260 –> [00:53:19],890
have you on the show again you know six

1191
[00:53:18],480 –> [00:53:22],500
months a year from now we can actually

1192
[00:53:19],890 –> [00:53:24],839
visit that yeah i can say here’s that

1193
[00:53:22],500 –> [00:53:27],150
thing and I made absolutely no money

1194
[00:53:24],840 –> [00:53:30],400
from it but oh my gosh was it so much

1195
[00:53:27],150 –> [00:53:33],940
fun right

1196
[00:53:30],400 –> [00:53:35],799
so is there any party dream that haven’t

1197
[00:53:33],940 –> [00:53:37],270
quite worked out yet is so hard to say

1198
[00:53:35],799 –> [00:53:39],490
because i’m so thankful for what I have

1199
[00:53:37],270 –> [00:53:42],339
because what I have is so much more than

1200
[00:53:39],490 –> [00:53:44],618
so many other people you know I I don’t

1201
[00:53:42],339 –> [00:53:47],710
say that to brag and I don’t say that I

1202
[00:53:44],619 –> [00:53:50],289
say that to be humble right because I

1203
[00:53:47],710 –> [00:53:52],900
I’ve been in a really much worse place

1204
[00:53:50],289 –> [00:53:55],420
emotionally and physically and

1205
[00:53:52],900 –> [00:53:59],619
financially and everything else but

1206
[00:53:55],420 –> [00:54:04],299
right now I i’m not there i have a

1207
[00:53:59],619 –> [00:54:07],660
wonderful life filled with friends and

1208
[00:54:04],299 –> [00:54:10],630
people that care a wife who I just

1209
[00:54:07],660 –> [00:54:14],170
celebrated a years with this the this

1210
[00:54:10],630 –> [00:54:18],220
past Sunday who I absolutely adore and

1211
[00:54:14],170 –> [00:54:22],720
respect and I’m all of and in worship

1212
[00:54:18],220 –> [00:54:27],788
I’ve got a little girl who is just a joy

1213
[00:54:22],720 –> [00:54:32],649
and a pleasure and so much fun to to be

1214
[00:54:27],789 –> [00:54:34],990
around and just fills my life with just

1215
[00:54:32],650 –> [00:54:36],940
such happiness we have our struggles

1216
[00:54:34],990 –> [00:54:40],209
like everybody else right now we’re

1217
[00:54:36],940 –> [00:54:45],520
dealing with the little girl got got

1218
[00:54:40],210 –> [00:54:49],89
licensed camp and hell and so spread to

1219
[00:54:45],520 –> [00:54:52],599
Bethany luckily being both short-haired

1220
[00:54:49],89 –> [00:54:57],308
an african-american i have been spared

1221
[00:54:52],599 –> [00:54:59],650
this far but but you know dealing with

1222
[00:54:57],309 –> [00:55:01],270
that you know we’ve had our challenges

1223
[00:54:59],650 –> [00:55:02],559
we’ve had our struggles is finding my

1224
[00:55:01],270 –> [00:55:05],740
wife and I actually went out our

1225
[00:55:02],559 –> [00:55:08],500
anniversary dinner last night so in lieu

1226
[00:55:05],740 –> [00:55:10],990
of a greeting card we started this

1227
[00:55:08],500 –> [00:55:13],270
practice where we write to each other in

1228
[00:55:10],990 –> [00:55:15],430
a notebook that we will pass back and

1229
[00:55:13],270 –> [00:55:17],799
forth and I wrote or about all the

1230
[00:55:15],430 –> [00:55:20],78
wonderful toys and stuff like that and

1231
[00:55:17],799 –> [00:55:22],420
the filled the past eight years and some

1232
[00:55:20],79 –> [00:55:24],339
of the great memories and wonderful

1233
[00:55:22],420 –> [00:55:25],180
travels that we’ve taken and things like

1234
[00:55:24],339 –> [00:55:28],270
that

1235
[00:55:25],180 –> [00:55:30],700
but I said I it to her over dinner that

1236
[00:55:28],270 –> [00:55:32],589
I didn’t want to write this and in you

1237
[00:55:30],700 –> [00:55:34],299
know something else that supposed to be

1238
[00:55:32],589 –> [00:55:37],359
about you know the love and the joy and

1239
[00:55:34],300 –> [00:55:40],720
all of that but we’ve all also faced a

1240
[00:55:37],359 –> [00:55:43],328
lot of a lot of difficult things you

1241
[00:55:40],720 –> [00:55:46],450
know she lost her mother to cancer a

1242
[00:55:43],329 –> [00:55:50],109
year after we got married you know and

1243
[00:55:46],450 –> [00:55:52],359
we spent three weeks in literally by her

1244
[00:55:50],109 –> [00:55:58],270
side and the hospital room

1245
[00:55:52],359 –> [00:55:59],680
her mother died on Christmas Day in my

1246
[00:55:58],270 –> [00:56:05],589
arms hit

1247
[00:55:59],680 –> [00:56:08],410
oh are you know that

1248
[00:56:05],589 –> [00:56:12],9
yeah we’ve we’ve had our struggles we’ve

1249
[00:56:08],410 –> [00:56:15],160
had our challenges but even those have

1250
[00:56:12],10 –> [00:56:18],309
been moved valuable lessons and are part

1251
[00:56:15],160 –> [00:56:20],290
of our journey and I look back on how

1252
[00:56:18],309 –> [00:56:24],339
we’ve come through those struggles and

1253
[00:56:20],290 –> [00:56:28],900
how we come out the other side without

1254
[00:56:24],339 –> [00:56:30],339
killing each other without you know and

1255
[00:56:28],900 –> [00:56:32],230
then the better for it

1256
[00:56:30],339 –> [00:56:36],160
yeah i’m i’m incredibly blessed and

1257
[00:56:32],230 –> [00:56:39],280
lucky I I i wish i could say that Aldo

1258
[00:56:36],160 –> [00:56:41],379
things are so her mobile google but

1259
[00:56:39],280 –> [00:56:44],470
quite frankly you know each one of us

1260
[00:56:41],380 –> [00:56:45],99
has at best a hundred years that’s

1261
[00:56:44],470 –> [00:56:47],78
nothing

1262
[00:56:45],99 –> [00:56:49],750
it really isn’t you know when you think

1263
[00:56:47],79 –> [00:56:51],940
about the fact that this the universe

1264
[00:56:49],750 –> [00:56:55],240
has been around for about fifteen

1265
[00:56:51],940 –> [00:56:57],280
billion years our planet 3 billion human

1266
[00:56:55],240 –> [00:57:00],220
life on this planet you know tens of

1267
[00:56:57],280 –> [00:57:03],549
thousands a hundred years is nothing

1268
[00:57:00],220 –> [00:57:07],89
it’s extremely fine I none of his

1269
[00:57:03],549 –> [00:57:11],470
guaranteed one of my favorite recent

1270
[00:57:07],89 –> [00:57:14],740
thoughts on this is I’ve got a friend

1271
[00:57:11],470 –> [00:57:16],598
who has another friend and neighbor down

1272
[00:57:14],740 –> [00:57:21],189
the street who has lou gehrig’s disease

1273
[00:57:16],599 –> [00:57:22],930
ALS she was relating the story to me he

1274
[00:57:21],190 –> [00:57:25],000
said that he loves it when you know kind

1275
[00:57:22],930 –> [00:57:28],118
of people come by the house and you know

1276
[00:57:25],000 –> [00:57:30],99
it knowing his situation knowing the

1277
[00:57:28],119 –> [00:57:32],380
finite nature of his life you know that

1278
[00:57:30],99 –> [00:57:35],530
maybe he’ll be gone in two to three

1279
[00:57:32],380 –> [00:57:37],960
months you know they they come in and

1280
[00:57:35],530 –> [00:57:40],180
they say oh yeah we’re so sorry

1281
[00:57:37],960 –> [00:57:43],690
you know his responses will don’t be

1282
[00:57:40],180 –> [00:57:45],160
sorry for me I know when I’m gonna die I

1283
[00:57:43],690 –> [00:57:45],880
know exactly kind of how it’s gonna

1284
[00:57:45],160 –> [00:57:48],69
happen

1285
[00:57:45],880 –> [00:57:49],690
even I can tell you like everything

1286
[00:57:48],70 –> [00:57:50],440
there is to know about my impending

1287
[00:57:49],690 –> [00:57:52],900
death

1288
[00:57:50],440 –> [00:57:55],420
you on the other hand have no idea when

1289
[00:57:52],900 –> [00:57:58],210
it’s going to come you could walk out

1290
[00:57:55],420 –> [00:57:59],410
that door and get literally hit by the

1291
[00:57:58],210 –> [00:58:01],540
river real bus

1292
[00:57:59],410 –> [00:58:03],910
guess what I know that’s not how I’m

1293
[00:58:01],540 –> [00:58:06],910
going to go because I can’t walk

1294
[00:58:03],910 –> [00:58:09],730
I can’t go out the door

1295
[00:58:06],910 –> [00:58:12],460
I’m not going to get hit by a bus the

1296
[00:58:09],730 –> [00:58:14],20
fact is I may live longer than you

1297
[00:58:12],460 –> [00:58:15],580
it’s putting into perspective most

1298
[00:58:14],20 –> [00:58:18],160
certainly and it’s the truth

1299
[00:58:15],580 –> [00:58:21],549
I know I know it sounds cliché to live

1300
[00:58:18],160 –> [00:58:24],940
each day as if it’s your last but i can

1301
[00:58:21],550 –> [00:58:28],30
tell you for certain that i have known

1302
[00:58:24],940 –> [00:58:31],210
i’m from 46 I could rattle off half a

1303
[00:58:28],30 –> [00:58:33],880
dozen people friends people I knew well

1304
[00:58:31],210 –> [00:58:34],900
that were there one day and gone the

1305
[00:58:33],880 –> [00:58:38],410
next

1306
[00:58:34],900 –> [00:58:41],230
my friend Steve who went out in the

1307
[00:58:38],410 –> [00:58:45],310
middle of winter to paint a garage that

1308
[00:58:41],230 –> [00:58:47],710
he had just built and had a bad here had

1309
[00:58:45],310 –> [00:58:49],630
a bad space heater in that garage felt a

1310
[00:58:47],710 –> [00:58:52],810
little tired thought it was just the

1311
[00:58:49],630 –> [00:58:54],580
late hour didn’t wake back up again this

1312
[00:58:52],810 –> [00:58:58],930
is someone who I literally seen the day

1313
[00:58:54],580 –> [00:59:01],839
before and had given a gift even right I

1314
[00:58:58],930 –> [00:59:04],868
my friend Stacey when i was when i was a

1315
[00:59:01],839 –> [00:59:05],650
teenager she was in college I went to a

1316
[00:59:04],869 –> [00:59:08],710
party

1317
[00:59:05],650 –> [00:59:10],630
you’ll not she was not a wild party girl

1318
[00:59:08],710 –> [00:59:13],150
but was at this party and someone

1319
[00:59:10],630 –> [00:59:14],720
offered her some coke and she thought

1320
[00:59:13],150 –> [00:59:18],500
you know

1321
[00:59:14],720 –> [00:59:21],348
I’ll try it dad just had a bad reaction

1322
[00:59:18],500 –> [00:59:25],760
had a heart attack died literally within

1323
[00:59:21],349 –> [00:59:27],590
minutes so I know it sounds cliché I

1324
[00:59:25],760 –> [00:59:29],599
don’t have any fear of death because i

1325
[00:59:27],590 –> [00:59:30],859
know that death is coming

1326
[00:59:29],599 –> [00:59:32],960
it’s not a matter of if it’s a matter

1327
[00:59:30],859 –> [00:59:36],170
when as a matter of fact death is the

1328
[00:59:32],960 –> [00:59:39],20
one constant in this universe anything

1329
[00:59:36],170 –> [00:59:41],900
that is born will die this planet will

1330
[00:59:39],20 –> [00:59:44],540
die this galaxy will die

1331
[00:59:41],900 –> [00:59:45],740
our son died the universe eventually

1332
[00:59:44],540 –> [00:59:49],460
will die

1333
[00:59:45],740 –> [00:59:53],390
anything that lives dies is perhaps the

1334
[00:59:49],460 –> [00:59:55],160
only universal truth there is and quite

1335
[00:59:53],390 –> [00:59:58],490
frankly all of those things I just

1336
[00:59:55],160 –> [01:00:02],000
rattled off will live far longer than

1337
[00:59:58],490 –> [01:00:03],740
any literally thousands of times

1338
[01:00:02],000 –> [01:00:06],109
tens of thousands hundreds of thousands

1339
[01:00:03],740 –> [01:00:09],379
of times billions of thousands of times

1340
[01:00:06],109 –> [01:00:12],500
longer than we will

1341
[01:00:09],380 –> [01:00:15],170
so for me to complain about any single

1342
[01:00:12],500 –> [01:00:15],800
thing in my life is all wind and sales

1343
[01:00:15],170 –> [01:00:16],910
man

1344
[01:00:15],800 –> [01:00:23],450
so what are your dreams for the future

1345
[01:00:16],910 –> [01:00:25],368
look like little bit lovely follow-up

1346
[01:00:23],450 –> [01:00:32],598
question lovely follow

1347
[01:00:25],369 –> [01:00:34],580
thank you oh jeez you know what my

1348
[01:00:32],599 –> [01:00:37],520
dreams for the future look like this

1349
[01:00:34],580 –> [01:00:39],920
I hope that when i get off this call i

1350
[01:00:37],520 –> [01:00:42],619
have just enough time for watch and then

1351
[01:00:39],920 –> [01:00:44],359
i’m going to i’m going to send a text to

1352
[01:00:42],619 –> [01:00:47],180
my our friend who’s building the

1353
[01:00:44],359 –> [01:00:48],710
building the fence for us and I’m going

1354
[01:00:47],180 –> [01:00:52],848
to check in and see if he needs any help

1355
[01:00:48],710 –> [01:00:55],970
and if anything my dream is to have a

1356
[01:00:52],849 –> [01:00:58],849
have a new fence at some point by the

1357
[01:00:55],970 –> [01:01:03],500
end of the day today or tomorrow

1358
[01:00:58],849 –> [01:01:05],420
that’s that’s my dream I be not okay and

1359
[01:01:03],500 –> [01:01:07],940
it and I mean then that is to say that

1360
[01:01:05],420 –> [01:01:10],400
I’m too i’m too busy concentrating on

1361
[01:01:07],940 –> [01:01:13],430
right now and and a few moments from

1362
[01:01:10],400 –> [01:01:15],710
right now for me too if I were to say

1363
[01:01:13],430 –> [01:01:18],290
what are my dreams for the future guy

1364
[01:01:15],710 –> [01:01:20],420
gosh I hope that Beatrix grows up and in

1365
[01:01:18],290 –> [01:01:23],259
a world that’s still here that would be

1366
[01:01:20],420 –> [01:01:25],240
nice i’m super kind of

1367
[01:01:23],260 –> [01:01:28],810
you no worry that’s not going to be the

1368
[01:01:25],240 –> [01:01:30],879
case just for a number of reasons not

1369
[01:01:28],810 –> [01:01:32],830
the least of which is you know we’ve

1370
[01:01:30],880 –> [01:01:35],380
we’ve got a very serious problem on our

1371
[01:01:32],830 –> [01:01:37],569
hands with with climate change and we’ve

1372
[01:01:35],380 –> [01:01:39],160
got all of the technology to I don’t

1373
[01:01:37],570 –> [01:01:41],110
know make some immediate and quick

1374
[01:01:39],160 –> [01:01:43],390
changes but none of the people willing

1375
[01:01:41],110 –> [01:01:45],400
to get together and talk about it and

1376
[01:01:43],390 –> [01:01:47],589
put down their differences and get the

1377
[01:01:45],400 –> [01:01:49],270
work worked on you know we could power

1378
[01:01:47],590 –> [01:01:51],850
this entire planet with solar panels

1379
[01:01:49],270 –> [01:01:53],470
that would take up and take up so little

1380
[01:01:51],850 –> [01:01:56],319
space in the middle of the desert in

1381
[01:01:53],470 –> [01:01:58],330
Africa that you know if you were to see

1382
[01:01:56],320 –> [01:02:00],700
it from a satellite you couldn’t even

1383
[01:01:58],330 –> [01:02:02],980
see it from space you wouldn’t be able

1384
[01:02:00],700 –> [01:02:03],730
to see it with the naked eye yet is that

1385
[01:02:02],980 –> [01:02:09],400
happening

1386
[01:02:03],730 –> [01:02:12],70
no you know you on must just released

1387
[01:02:09],400 –> [01:02:16],270
all the technology needed to make

1388
[01:02:12],70 –> [01:02:19],30
completely clean electric vehicles

1389
[01:02:16],270 –> [01:02:21],460
available to anyone we get all be

1390
[01:02:19],30 –> [01:02:23],410
driving Tesla technology and every

1391
[01:02:21],460 –> [01:02:27],220
single one of every single one of our

1392
[01:02:23],410 –> [01:02:29],80
cars and in chevrolet and forward and

1393
[01:02:27],220 –> [01:02:32],49
all of the auto manufacturers could

1394
[01:02:29],80 –> [01:02:33],40
switch their entire vehicle fleet to it

1395
[01:02:32],50 –> [01:02:35],770
tomorrow

1396
[01:02:33],40 –> [01:02:37],750
not going to happen so I mean the other

1397
[01:02:35],770 –> [01:02:39],490
these are things I worry about I suppose

1398
[01:02:37],750 –> [01:02:42],850
my dreams for the future that my

1399
[01:02:39],490 –> [01:02:46],629
daughter grows up to have have the

1400
[01:02:42],850 –> [01:02:48],220
ability to live hers that my son’s you

1401
[01:02:46],630 –> [01:02:50],200
know continue to find their way as

1402
[01:02:48],220 –> [01:02:53],140
adults young men and an increasingly

1403
[01:02:50],200 –> [01:02:54],609
difficult world for adult young men

1404
[01:02:53],140 –> [01:02:57],549
especially adults young men of color

1405
[01:02:54],610 –> [01:03:01],420
especially about young men of color who

1406
[01:02:57],550 –> [01:03:03],970
have who have not received all of the

1407
[01:03:01],420 –> [01:03:05],740
education that is was made available to

1408
[01:03:03],970 –> [01:03:08],379
them i mean i have these are the sorts

1409
[01:03:05],740 –> [01:03:10],959
of things I hoped for i guess but right

1410
[01:03:08],380 –> [01:03:13],120
now I like to you know go with the

1411
[01:03:10],960 –> [01:03:13],630
warranty on quote getting back again to

1412
[01:03:13],120 –> [01:03:17],170
death

1413
[01:03:13],630 –> [01:03:19],210
Warren Zevon musician most famously

1414
[01:03:17],170 –> [01:03:21],970
known for werewolves of london was a

1415
[01:03:19],210 –> [01:03:23],980
frequent guest on the David Letterman

1416
[01:03:21],970 –> [01:03:26],319
Show he got brain cancer

1417
[01:03:23],980 –> [01:03:29],50
newly only had a few months live Dave

1418
[01:03:26],320 –> [01:03:31],210
but invited him on for a final kind of

1419
[01:03:29],50 –> [01:03:33],100
farewell performance you know they

1420
[01:03:31],210 –> [01:03:35],170
didn’t well too much on the fact that

1421
[01:03:33],100 –> [01:03:37],450
you know he was dying but they’ve said

1422
[01:03:35],170 –> [01:03:40],60
you know hey you know kind of know

1423
[01:03:37],450 –> [01:03:42],250
what’s going on and kind of on the other

1424
[01:03:40],60 –> [01:03:43],840
side of this reality they say that you

1425
[01:03:42],250 –> [01:03:46],120
know if you kind of know this stuff you

1426
[01:03:43],840 –> [01:03:47],710
get this great wisdom and you don’t

1427
[01:03:46],120 –> [01:03:51],520
think like that yes or anything that

1428
[01:03:47],710 –> [01:03:53],650
you’ve learned the you a final kind of

1429
[01:03:51],520 –> [01:03:57],220
thought you’d like to impart or anything

1430
[01:03:53],650 –> [01:03:58],990
like that and warren zevon just kind of

1431
[01:03:57],220 –> [01:04:00],580
said yeah it’s constructed shoulder and

1432
[01:03:58],990 –> [01:04:02],890
said well i guess just enjoy your

1433
[01:04:00],580 –> [01:04:04],779
sandwich enjoy every sandwich that’s the

1434
[01:04:02],890 –> [01:04:06],970
only dream i have before we get to your

1435
[01:04:04],780 –> [01:04:08],980
your last thoughts what site i assume

1436
[01:04:06],970 –> [01:04:09],669
you have more to say then enjoy every

1437
[01:04:08],980 –> [01:04:12],430
sandwich

1438
[01:04:09],670 –> [01:04:14],290
good let’s talk about because you have

1439
[01:04:12],430 –> [01:04:15],850
so many and and I know we’re running

1440
[01:04:14],290 –> [01:04:18],550
extremely long

1441
[01:04:15],850 –> [01:04:20],200
I’m sorry I no don’t be sorry I’d love

1442
[01:04:18],550 –> [01:04:21],610
hearing your stories and and the

1443
[01:04:20],200 –> [01:04:23],140
struggles that you’ve dealt with over

1444
[01:04:21],610 –> [01:04:24],610
the years and it really puts a lot of

1445
[01:04:23],140 –> [01:04:28],29
things in perspective especially as a

1446
[01:04:24],610 –> [01:04:30],160
fan to hear these stories so I mean

1447
[01:04:28],30 –> [01:04:34],450
let’s get to your blog’s I mean you got

1448
[01:04:30],160 –> [01:04:37],720
mental math yeah real mac pro com the

1449
[01:04:34],450 –> [01:04:40],689
cramped which is my my blog this kind of

1450
[01:04:37],720 –> [01:04:43],750
focused on paper and pens and

1451
[01:04:40],690 –> [01:04:44],530
typewriters and sort of analog writing

1452
[01:04:43],750 –> [01:04:48],520
tools

1453
[01:04:44],530 –> [01:04:50],260
yeah I’ve got a few and I got me a guy

1454
[01:04:48],520 –> [01:04:52],480
goes write a blog for my daughter

1455
[01:04:50],260 –> [01:04:56],440
I’ve got a tumblr called the random post

1456
[01:04:52],480 –> [01:05:00],850
armed got a lot of sites is hard to keep

1457
[01:04:56],440 –> [01:05:03],940
them all straight but don’t bump on

1458
[01:05:00],850 –> [01:05:05],200
actually no no it’s not hard to keep

1459
[01:05:03],940 –> [01:05:08],830
them all straight and there’s a reason

1460
[01:05:05],200 –> [01:05:12],430
why that summer separated from others

1461
[01:05:08],830 –> [01:05:14],680
right you know i know there are some

1462
[01:05:12],430 –> [01:05:16],750
topics like the intersection of

1463
[01:05:14],680 –> [01:05:21],220
Technology and simplicity with minimal

1464
[01:05:16],750 –> [01:05:24],190
mac that I feel are large enough and

1465
[01:05:21],220 –> [01:05:27],189
deep enough for me to spend years

1466
[01:05:24],190 –> [01:05:30],880
exploring just that topic like there’s

1467
[01:05:27],190 –> [01:05:31],660
enough to wrap that around the site as

1468
[01:05:30],880 –> [01:05:34],600
it were

1469
[01:05:31],660 –> [01:05:38],560
same thing with the with the cramped now

1470
[01:05:34],600 –> [01:05:40],630
there’s a lot a lot of pin blogs out

1471
[01:05:38],560 –> [01:05:42],70
there there’s a lot of notebook blogs

1472
[01:05:40],630 –> [01:05:43],880
out there there’s a lot of you and they

1473
[01:05:42],70 –> [01:05:45],319
do lots of product reviews

1474
[01:05:43],880 –> [01:05:47],59
things like that and I don’t knock at

1475
[01:05:45],319 –> [01:05:51],470
all as a matter of fact I think you

1476
[01:05:47],59 –> [01:05:53],539
folks like Brad dowdy and reichert with

1477
[01:05:51],470 –> [01:05:55],848
the well-appointed desk

1478
[01:05:53],539 –> [01:05:58],789
Brad he does the pen and I do I think

1479
[01:05:55],849 –> [01:06:00],380
there’s a lot of room for that I wanted

1480
[01:05:58],789 –> [01:06:02],930
to take a slightly different approach

1481
[01:06:00],380 –> [01:06:05],720
not to say that I won’t do some product

1482
[01:06:02],930 –> [01:06:08],538
reviews when and have at the cramped but

1483
[01:06:05],720 –> [01:06:12],230
that my want to approach this from a

1484
[01:06:08],539 –> [01:06:14],329
actual usage and action perspective like

1485
[01:06:12],230 –> [01:06:17],720
it not just about the tools themselves

1486
[01:06:14],329 –> [01:06:19],970
but like how they’re used i want i want

1487
[01:06:17],720 –> [01:06:22],279
to see things that are being used and

1488
[01:06:19],970 –> [01:06:25],669
loved right i wanna you know see

1489
[01:06:22],279 –> [01:06:27],980
handwriting I want to see I want I want

1490
[01:06:25],670 –> [01:06:30],500
to see typing Chrissy like things being

1491
[01:06:27],980 –> [01:06:35],900
used i don’t know if that makes sense

1492
[01:06:30],500 –> [01:06:37],309
but it does to me and so yeah that’s why

1493
[01:06:35],900 –> [01:06:40],700
I have a lot because there are some

1494
[01:06:37],309 –> [01:06:42],259
subjects that that I feel warranted for

1495
[01:06:40],700 –> [01:06:42],680
everything else that goes on my personal

1496
[01:06:42],259 –> [01:06:44],450
site

1497
[01:06:42],680 –> [01:06:47],419
yeah i mean the way I found out about

1498
[01:06:44],450 –> [01:06:50],328
you i think was to all or I think it’s

1499
[01:06:47],420 –> [01:06:52],670
probably too all.com you ever posted one

1500
[01:06:50],329 –> [01:06:54],109
of your posts for minimal Matt yeah and

1501
[01:06:52],670 –> [01:06:55],849
that’s when I found out about you and

1502
[01:06:54],109 –> [01:06:58],38
then you eventually started your own

1503
[01:06:55],849 –> [01:07:01],130
podcast which was I thought was great

1504
[01:06:58],39 –> [01:07:03],19
because I i listen to that that episode

1505
[01:07:01],130 –> [01:07:07],220
with the two British fellows

1506
[01:07:03],19 –> [01:07:09],859
oh wow so so Mike who’s always host on

1507
[01:07:07],220 –> [01:07:12],500
the show but I don’t know the other one

1508
[01:07:09],859 –> [01:07:15],500
would have been Terry Lucy your eye

1509
[01:07:12],500 –> [01:07:17],750
well no no not on your show all the bro

1510
[01:07:15],500 –> [01:07:20],299
show the brochure right right yeah yeah

1511
[01:07:17],750 –> [01:07:23],359
I was Terry Lucy and and my curly yeah

1512
[01:07:20],299 –> [01:07:25],788
and then then you guys got together and

1513
[01:07:23],359 –> [01:07:27],410
started enough which yeah it’s really

1514
[01:07:25],789 –> [01:07:30],19
good i mean some of my favorite things

1515
[01:07:27],410 –> [01:07:34],220
from that was the clothes hanger trick

1516
[01:07:30],19 –> [01:07:38],689
that works really well I do that all the

1517
[01:07:34],220 –> [01:07:41],000
time it does actually I i do it i had to

1518
[01:07:38],690 –> [01:07:43],640
keep going back through it too thick to

1519
[01:07:41],000 –> [01:07:45],950
prune and it doesn’t help when you your

1520
[01:07:43],640 –> [01:07:48],288
weight goes up and down as i was mine

1521
[01:07:45],950 –> [01:07:49],308
does because I’m a runner but Allah part

1522
[01:07:48],289 –> [01:07:52],609
part of the time

1523
[01:07:49],309 –> [01:07:54],289
yeah well and so the clothes hanger

1524
[01:07:52],609 –> [01:07:56],220
trick for those who are listening to

1525
[01:07:54],289 –> [01:07:59],280
this and are familiar here’s here’s

1526
[01:07:56],220 –> [01:08:02],160
what it is once the season take all take

1527
[01:07:59],280 –> [01:08:04],859
all your clothes there are hangers and

1528
[01:08:02],160 –> [01:08:07],440
and even if you have something are maybe

1529
[01:08:04],859 –> [01:08:09],598
put them on a hanger and turn that

1530
[01:08:07],440 –> [01:08:11],849
hangar backwards in your closet so

1531
[01:08:09],599 –> [01:08:12],780
instead of hanging it like in where you

1532
[01:08:11],849 –> [01:08:15],810
can grab it

1533
[01:08:12],780 –> [01:08:18],29
hang it from the back turn it around so

1534
[01:08:15],810 –> [01:08:20],250
the hook is coming from the back do that

1535
[01:08:18],29 –> [01:08:22],799
with all of them then as you go through

1536
[01:08:20],250 –> [01:08:24],479
the season when you take out you know

1537
[01:08:22],799 –> [01:08:26],130
close to where you take that you know

1538
[01:08:24],479 –> [01:08:28],410
hanging now you can have to remove it

1539
[01:08:26],130 –> [01:08:30],359
backwards to get it out but you take

1540
[01:08:28],410 –> [01:08:32],849
that off and you put it back in the

1541
[01:08:30],359 –> [01:08:34],589
right way and you make sure what

1542
[01:08:32],850 –> [01:08:36],420
everywhere would wash it whenever put it

1543
[01:08:34],589 –> [01:08:39],839
back on the hanger the right way but

1544
[01:08:36],420 –> [01:08:41],640
basically what you’ll find is that at

1545
[01:08:39],839 –> [01:08:45],809
the end of that if you have anything

1546
[01:08:41],640 –> [01:08:47],940
that is still facing the wrong direction

1547
[01:08:45],810 –> [01:08:49],770
that’s the time to ask yourself whether

1548
[01:08:47],939 –> [01:08:52],318
or not that stuff you really actually

1549
[01:08:49],770 –> [01:08:52],770
need because you’re actually not using

1550
[01:08:52],319 –> [01:08:55],620
it

1551
[01:08:52],770 –> [01:08:57],719
yeah definitely and I love it because it

1552
[01:08:55],620 –> [01:09:00],988
definitely brings close to the forefront

1553
[01:08:57],719 –> [01:09:03],689
that I thought I was wearing or going to

1554
[01:09:00],988 –> [01:09:06],238
wear and then never actually did do

1555
[01:09:03],689 –> [01:09:09],660
yeah and they’re going to be some things

1556
[01:09:06],238 –> [01:09:11],160
that you wear very infrequently if you

1557
[01:09:09],660 –> [01:09:12],479
don’t especially if you work for

1558
[01:09:11],160 –> [01:09:16],19
yourself and you don’t have the sort of

1559
[01:09:12],479 –> [01:09:18],540
in you know thing where you’re wearing a

1560
[01:09:16],20 –> [01:09:19],529
suit and a nice shirt all the time well

1561
[01:09:18],540 –> [01:09:21],000
guess what

1562
[01:09:19],529 –> [01:09:22],500
you still might need that seemed mad

1563
[01:09:21],000 –> [01:09:24],270
nice shirt for the odd funeral that

1564
[01:09:22],500 –> [01:09:27],270
comes up but then you may not wear it

1565
[01:09:24],270 –> [01:09:29],549
for you know a year you know I mean like

1566
[01:09:27],270 –> [01:09:31],290
you know they’re going to be the sum of

1567
[01:09:29],549 –> [01:09:33],299
those things this is not to say that you

1568
[01:09:31],290 –> [01:09:35],370
always just all that stuff away

1569
[01:09:33],299 –> [01:09:36],870
this is just simply to say those are the

1570
[01:09:35],370 –> [01:09:40],920
things that you should be asking the

1571
[01:09:36],870 –> [01:09:42],988
question about do i need this if so why

1572
[01:09:40],920 –> [01:09:46],140
what is its justification for being in

1573
[01:09:42],988 –> [01:09:48],899
my life or would it be better off in

1574
[01:09:46],140 –> [01:09:51],239
someone else’s at the goodwill or giving

1575
[01:09:48],899 –> [01:09:52],679
it to a friend or whatnot things like

1576
[01:09:51],238 –> [01:09:54],89
that and it works for a lot of other

1577
[01:09:52],680 –> [01:09:56],70
things to life

1578
[01:09:54],89 –> [01:10:00],150
I find one of the most effective ways to

1579
[01:09:56],70 –> [01:10:01],110
clean a desk is to put a box at the end

1580
[01:10:00],150 –> [01:10:03],239
of that desk

1581
[01:10:01],110 –> [01:10:06],900
take your hand and sweep everything off

1582
[01:10:03],239 –> [01:10:10],169
of it into that box now your desk is

1583
[01:10:06],900 –> [01:10:13],80
clean and literally 10 seconds and now

1584
[01:10:10],170 –> [01:10:13],920
as you need things you know all i need a

1585
[01:10:13],80 –> [01:10:16],620
stapler

1586
[01:10:13],920 –> [01:10:18],900
oh you go look in the Box you take out

1587
[01:10:16],620 –> [01:10:21],180
the stapler you put the stapler on the

1588
[01:10:18],900 –> [01:10:23],9
desk or in the drawer where it belongs

1589
[01:10:21],180 –> [01:10:24],480
but basically you set a period of time

1590
[01:10:23],10 –> [01:10:27],000
let’s just say two months three months

1591
[01:10:24],480 –> [01:10:31],19
whatever it is you set a period of time

1592
[01:10:27],000 –> [01:10:33],000
that everything that is left in that box

1593
[01:10:31],20 –> [01:10:35],70
at the end that’s the stuff i’m not

1594
[01:10:33],000 –> [01:10:38],190
using or that’s the stuff i rarely use

1595
[01:10:35],70 –> [01:10:39],389
and maybe I need to reconsider whether

1596
[01:10:38],190 –> [01:10:42],89
or not i need this

1597
[01:10:39],390 –> [01:10:45],90
it works for all sorts of things all

1598
[01:10:42],90 –> [01:10:47],219
sorts of things applications you want to

1599
[01:10:45],90 –> [01:10:48],390
do you want to see what applications you

1600
[01:10:47],219 –> [01:10:50],280
have installed that you’re really

1601
[01:10:48],390 –> [01:10:51],840
actively using let’s just take phone

1602
[01:10:50],280 –> [01:10:53],429
apps for instance because that’s the one

1603
[01:10:51],840 –> [01:10:56],370
that I think a lot of us are guilty and

1604
[01:10:53],430 –> [01:10:59],580
just let me just by this 99-cent thing

1605
[01:10:56],370 –> [01:11:00],900
to try it out and then i can quickly

1606
[01:10:59],580 –> [01:11:03],120
forget about it

1607
[01:11:00],900 –> [01:11:05],219
well now that Apple gives you folders or

1608
[01:11:03],120 –> [01:11:06],780
their take all those things and put them

1609
[01:11:05],219 –> [01:11:09],780
two pages away

1610
[01:11:06],780 –> [01:11:12],120
clear off your home screen and then as

1611
[01:11:09],780 –> [01:11:14],519
you need things before launching them

1612
[01:11:12],120 –> [01:11:17],760
drag them back to your home screen right

1613
[01:11:14],520 –> [01:11:19],650
and you’ll quickly find out which things

1614
[01:11:17],760 –> [01:11:21],630
you use most frequently in which things

1615
[01:11:19],650 –> [01:11:23],639
you really don’t and whether you should

1616
[01:11:21],630 –> [01:11:26],340
consider deleting them are God you know

1617
[01:11:23],640 –> [01:11:27],989
it it’s it’s things like that basically

1618
[01:11:26],340 –> [01:11:31],739
taking everything putting it somewhere

1619
[01:11:27],989 –> [01:11:34],379
and then as you use things taking them

1620
[01:11:31],739 –> [01:11:36],660
out of that thing and then re-evaluating

1621
[01:11:34],380 –> [01:11:37],320
at some specified point in time down the

1622
[01:11:36],660 –> [01:11:38],969
road

1623
[01:11:37],320 –> [01:11:42],150
yeah i mean it creates like a physical

1624
[01:11:38],969 –> [01:11:43],920
check list without recording every hey

1625
[01:11:42],150 –> [01:11:44],549
my blue shirt haven’t used that in a

1626
[01:11:43],920 –> [01:11:47],190
while

1627
[01:11:44],550 –> [01:11:49],140
yeah exactly but actually you did you

1628
[01:11:47],190 –> [01:11:52],139
just forgot to record it it now

1629
[01:11:49],140 –> [01:11:53],760
yeah Barbie olives and it is very visual

1630
[01:11:52],140 –> [01:11:55],890
to these sorts of things you can

1631
[01:11:53],760 –> [01:11:57],600
immediately look at that box and see how

1632
[01:11:55],890 –> [01:11:59],160
full it is you can immediately look at

1633
[01:11:57],600 –> [01:12:01],200
your closet and see how many of those

1634
[01:11:59],160 –> [01:12:02],700
hangers are turned the opposite

1635
[01:12:01],200 –> [01:12:05],820
direction you know

1636
[01:12:02],700 –> [01:12:08],610
yeah the other thing that I was always a

1637
[01:12:05],820 –> [01:12:09],929
big fan of this your final choices

1638
[01:12:08],610 –> [01:12:13],530
mm-hmm

1639
[01:12:09],930 –> [01:12:16],290
yep that’s uh you know something i still

1640
[01:12:13],530 –> [01:12:19],19
do and served me very well

1641
[01:12:16],290 –> [01:12:21],450
final choice is basically or this and

1642
[01:12:19],20 –> [01:12:23],400
that is that a lot of things when it

1643
[01:12:21],450 –> [01:12:25],349
comes to a lot of things not everything

1644
[01:12:23],400 –> [01:12:27],330
there are certain things that are meant

1645
[01:12:25],350 –> [01:12:29],790
to be replaced every few years or things

1646
[01:12:27],330 –> [01:12:32],10
that are not built him where there is

1647
[01:12:29],790 –> [01:12:33],360
nothing built to last you know someone

1648
[01:12:32],10 –> [01:12:35],640
like you know how do you apply final

1649
[01:12:33],360 –> [01:12:37],980
choices to a toaster well you don’t

1650
[01:12:35],640 –> [01:12:39],930
toasters not meant to last for a hundred

1651
[01:12:37],980 –> [01:12:43],110
years toasters are generally built to

1652
[01:12:39],930 –> [01:12:46],170
last maybe five to ten and so because of

1653
[01:12:43],110 –> [01:12:48],929
that II can’t apply it there but like

1654
[01:12:46],170 –> [01:12:52],50
you know so the an example i give is

1655
[01:12:48],930 –> [01:12:54],60
there’s these boots the red wing boots

1656
[01:12:52],50 –> [01:12:55],770
they’re very expensive correct wing

1657
[01:12:54],60 –> [01:12:57],390
boots right wing boots are in general

1658
[01:12:55],770 –> [01:12:59],340
very expensive why are they expensive

1659
[01:12:57],390 –> [01:13:01],560
well they’re expensive because they’re

1660
[01:12:59],340 –> [01:13:03],630
extremely well-made why are they

1661
[01:13:01],560 –> [01:13:05],400
extremely well-made while they’re made

1662
[01:13:03],630 –> [01:13:10],320
to last and they’ve been made the last

1663
[01:13:05],400 –> [01:13:15],30
for a very long time and I could I don’t

1664
[01:13:10],320 –> [01:13:16],590
know by a you know twenty-dollar three

1665
[01:13:15],30 –> [01:13:19],259
or four dollar fifty dollar pair of

1666
[01:13:16],590 –> [01:13:22],50
boots that serve me for a few years

1667
[01:13:19],260 –> [01:13:24],420
they’ll have to replace the few years or

1668
[01:13:22],50 –> [01:13:26],130
i could make the final choice of just

1669
[01:13:24],420 –> [01:13:27],630
buying this one pair of

1670
[01:13:26],130 –> [01:13:29],340
three-hundred-dollar boots

1671
[01:13:27],630 –> [01:13:32],100
ultimately I’m spending the same amount

1672
[01:13:29],340 –> [01:13:35],40
of money is either 10 pairs of the of of

1673
[01:13:32],100 –> [01:13:37],470
the of the thirty dollar boots or one

1674
[01:13:35],40 –> [01:13:38],820
pair of the but guess what I don’t ever

1675
[01:13:37],470 –> [01:13:41],550
have to think about a pair of boots

1676
[01:13:38],820 –> [01:13:43],259
again now I’ve made the final choice and

1677
[01:13:41],550 –> [01:13:45],450
the choices that pair of boots and as

1678
[01:13:43],260 –> [01:13:46],950
long as I take care of them and fel the

1679
[01:13:45],450 –> [01:13:48],599
soul where’s through they will replace

1680
[01:13:46],950 –> [01:13:51],360
the soul you know red wing is a

1681
[01:13:48],600 –> [01:13:53],280
red-winged company is a company has been

1682
[01:13:51],360 –> [01:13:54],900
in business for a hundred years and

1683
[01:13:53],280 –> [01:13:57],360
probably be in business for a hundred

1684
[01:13:54],900 –> [01:14:01],379
more over a hundred years actually and

1685
[01:13:57],360 –> [01:14:03],780
they will resole replace whatever fails

1686
[01:14:01],380 –> [01:14:05],880
on that boot for you know next to

1687
[01:14:03],780 –> [01:14:07],920
nothing so why not

1688
[01:14:05],880 –> [01:14:10],230
that’s the same thing you know with the

1689
[01:14:07],920 –> [01:14:11],970
talking game background to go rock right

1690
[01:14:10],230 –> [01:14:13],620
you could when those who are not

1691
[01:14:11],970 –> [01:14:15],930
familiar with GORUCK bill and look and

1692
[01:14:13],620 –> [01:14:17],849
see what their special forces grade

1693
[01:14:15],930 –> [01:14:20],950
backpacks cost

1694
[01:14:17],850 –> [01:14:24],790
they’re probably going to pick up along

1695
[01:14:20],950 –> [01:14:27],490
because you know they’re you kind of

1696
[01:14:24],790 –> [01:14:30],190
middle-of-the-road average backpack is

1697
[01:14:27],490 –> [01:14:32],320
300 box but guess what is the last

1698
[01:14:30],190 –> [01:14:33],400
backpack you’ll ever have to buy you’re

1699
[01:14:32],320 –> [01:14:35],860
never going to have to buy another

1700
[01:14:33],400 –> [01:14:38],349
backpack that backpack will last a

1701
[01:14:35],860 –> [01:14:40],929
lifetime and they have a lifetime

1702
[01:14:38],350 –> [01:14:43],630
guarantee on it they will repair or

1703
[01:14:40],930 –> [01:14:45],100
replace it in pepper tunity or however

1704
[01:14:43],630 –> [01:14:46],240
long they last

1705
[01:14:45],100 –> [01:14:47],710
that’s the other thing you have to look

1706
[01:14:46],240 –> [01:14:49],179
at when you’re looking at final choices

1707
[01:14:47],710 –> [01:14:51],520
to and one thing I don’t think I touched

1708
[01:14:49],180 –> [01:14:54],190
on very well which is is not just a

1709
[01:14:51],520 –> [01:14:56],620
matter of looking at the product is also

1710
[01:14:54],190 –> [01:14:59],290
matter of looking at the company right

1711
[01:14:56],620 –> [01:15:01],120
because a lifetime guarantee from a

1712
[01:14:59],290 –> [01:15:06],70
company that only is around for two

1713
[01:15:01],120 –> [01:15:12],160
years is going to help you

1714
[01:15:06],70 –> [01:15:14],650
hmmm it might help them but is not going

1715
[01:15:12],160 –> [01:15:17],830
to help you and so I’m very careful

1716
[01:15:14],650 –> [01:15:21],219
about that you know i think i could

1717
[01:15:17],830 –> [01:15:24],700
reasonably see go rock being a hundred

1718
[01:15:21],220 –> [01:15:26],470
your company like it easily see you know

1719
[01:15:24],700 –> [01:15:27],820
obviously red wing has already been a

1720
[01:15:26],470 –> [01:15:29],890
hundred your company is going to be a

1721
[01:15:27],820 –> [01:15:32],440
200-year company right

1722
[01:15:29],890 –> [01:15:34],750
why well because that’s you know I’ve

1723
[01:15:32],440 –> [01:15:37],900
looked at the company i’ve done more

1724
[01:15:34],750 –> [01:15:39],940
than just looked at their boots you know

1725
[01:15:37],900 –> [01:15:41],679
that making a final choices about

1726
[01:15:39],940 –> [01:15:43],839
looking at everything looking at the

1727
[01:15:41],680 –> [01:15:46],870
company looking at the warranty looking

1728
[01:15:43],840 –> [01:15:49],150
at the you know because you you want to

1729
[01:15:46],870 –> [01:15:51],70
do all this work up front so you don’t

1730
[01:15:49],150 –> [01:15:53],290
have to do it every single time again so

1731
[01:15:51],70 –> [01:15:54],400
you only have two at once so is there

1732
[01:15:53],290 –> [01:15:56],890
any last thoughts you’d like to share

1733
[01:15:54],400 –> [01:16:00],280
and I can’t pick enjoy every sandwich

1734
[01:15:56],890 –> [01:16:04],300
um especially being that that’s not my

1735
[01:16:00],280 –> [01:16:06],429
thought I i think if anything this is a

1736
[01:16:04],300 –> [01:16:09],580
very very very short life as I’ve

1737
[01:16:06],430 –> [01:16:11],230
already laid out there’s a multitude of

1738
[01:16:09],580 –> [01:16:14],890
ways you can spend it

1739
[01:16:11],230 –> [01:16:19],450
you can spend it wrapped and worry and

1740
[01:16:14],890 –> [01:16:21],790
suffering and doubt and loathing and

1741
[01:16:19],450 –> [01:16:27],160
hating and all these negative emotions

1742
[01:16:21],790 –> [01:16:29],170
or you can spend it looking around at

1743
[01:16:27],160 –> [01:16:31],630
the very fact that you get it in the

1744
[01:16:29],170 –> [01:16:34],750
first place and finding happiness

1745
[01:16:31],630 –> [01:16:37],120
they’re finding joy they’re letting that

1746
[01:16:34],750 –> [01:16:38],860
alleviate your suffering suffering and

1747
[01:16:37],120 –> [01:16:41],860
alleviate your worry

1748
[01:16:38],860 –> [01:16:44],620
quite frankly you know I hate to tell

1749
[01:16:41],860 –> [01:16:46],540
you this but not paying your mortgage

1750
[01:16:44],620 –> [01:16:51],10
will get you kicked out of your house

1751
[01:16:46],540 –> [01:16:53],560
but it’s a short life you don’t have to

1752
[01:16:51],10 –> [01:16:54],940
worry about that for too long not saying

1753
[01:16:53],560 –> [01:17:01],120
that you shouldn’t be bored as you

1754
[01:16:54],940 –> [01:17:03],580
should but just saying that just saying

1755
[01:17:01],120 –> [01:17:05],769
that most of the things that we make a

1756
[01:17:03],580 –> [01:17:07],750
big deal out of really in the grand

1757
[01:17:05],770 –> [01:17:12],730
scheme of things not so big of a deal

1758
[01:17:07],750 –> [01:17:20],460
and if you really want to measure your

1759
[01:17:12],730 –> [01:17:25],19
success money is the worst way to do it

1760
[01:17:20],460 –> [01:17:27],989
right someone actually said to me today

1761
[01:17:25],20 –> [01:17:28],770
the actual phrase you know little time

1762
[01:17:27],989 –> [01:17:32],250
is money

1763
[01:17:28],770 –> [01:17:34],530
I said no you’re incorrect time is far

1764
[01:17:32],250 –> [01:17:37],380
more valuable than money money is a

1765
[01:17:34],530 –> [01:17:40],620
construct money doesn’t exist

1766
[01:17:37],380 –> [01:17:43],830
time is very real one of those things

1767
[01:17:40],620 –> [01:17:46],19
you can always get more of time is not

1768
[01:17:43],830 –> [01:17:48],120
one of those things you can always get

1769
[01:17:46],20 –> [01:17:49],770
more money you cannot get more time

1770
[01:17:48],120 –> [01:17:52],920
there is none

1771
[01:17:49],770 –> [01:17:55],560
it is finite is the most finite and most

1772
[01:17:52],920 –> [01:18:01],650
valuable resource in the world in the

1773
[01:17:55],560 –> [01:18:04],170
universe so no time is not money so if

1774
[01:18:01],650 –> [01:18:06],780
anything gap final thought be conscious

1775
[01:18:04],170 –> [01:18:10],920
of your time is the most valuable thing

1776
[01:18:06],780 –> [01:18:14],429
you have enjoy it that that was very

1777
[01:18:10],920 –> [01:18:15],750
beautifully put thank you no problem

1778
[01:18:14],430 –> [01:18:19],200
it was an honor having you on the show

1779
[01:18:15],750 –> [01:18:22],170
and and to be the longest show i have a

1780
[01:18:19],200 –> [01:18:24],480
sari and now you eat you shouldn’t have

1781
[01:18:22],170 –> [01:18:26],40
known from listening to enough that I

1782
[01:18:24],480 –> [01:18:29],250
can talk

1783
[01:18:26],40 –> [01:18:30],930
no I i know i know now i I’ve really

1784
[01:18:29],250 –> [01:18:32],969
appreciate you sharing all the stories

1785
[01:18:30],930 –> [01:18:35],610
and I mean it’s extremely inspirational

1786
[01:18:32],969 –> [01:18:37],350
thank you so much and i would love to

1787
[01:18:35],610 –> [01:18:39],450
have you on the show again and in six

1788
[01:18:37],350 –> [01:18:41],820
months to a year and and we’ll see how

1789
[01:18:39],450 –> [01:18:44],429
you’re making out then I would love that

1790
[01:18:41],820 –> [01:18:47],40
I’ll put all your blogs and your twitter

1791
[01:18:44],430 –> [01:18:47],790
accounts and your facebook pages mall

1792
[01:18:47],40 –> [01:18:50],790
that stop

1793
[01:18:47],790 –> [01:18:52],980
