Minimal Mac: Enough podcast, is one of the very few podcasts I listen to. I wanted to give a plug for them for two reasons, one because it’s top notch. Secondly, because in episode 25, Patrick Rhone discusses a topic that has always been a sore subject to me.

Patrick talks about a system of putting hanger hooks inward towards the wall, when you wear that particular piece of clothing you turn the hanger hook outward. This way in 3 to 4 months, you can see exactly what you’ve worn. So, then you can make a decision of wether to keep those clothes or donate them.

Also, keeping one tote with clothes that you think you may want to wear. Some might be slightly tight or loose. That way, in 3 to 4 months, you can go clothes shopping through the tote rather than just running out to buy more clothes.

So after listening to this episode, I decided that this was the plan of action I was going to take. I wound up taking out 4 contractor bags worth of clothing, to donate. The decision of what to keep and what to get rid of was made a bit more limiting. I decided to put a number to the amount of each type of clothing I could keep.

What follows is the types and amount of clothes I decided to keep:

Dress Coats: 5
Dress Pants: 7
Jeans: 4
Sports Teams Shirts: 6
Disney Shirts: 5
Printed T-Shirt: 3
Golf Shirts: 2
Non-Dress Button down Shirts: 7
Long Sleeve Non-Button Shirts: 3
Work Out Pants: 4
Long Sleeve Work Out Shirts: 4
Workout Shorts: 5
Workout T-Shirts: 7
Button down Dress Shirts: 5
Polos: 5
Color T Shirts: 12
Thermals: 4

Doing Clothes:
Workout Shorts: 2
Cargo Shorts: 2
Jeans: 2
Shirts: 4
Sweat Shirt: 1

To be honest, even after organizing my closet by the different types of clothes. I still feel there is room to remove some garments, and after only 3 weeks of doing this system. I can see which shirts I tend to shy away from, for one reason or another.

One thing I had to do, with my fiance, was pick up two pieces of clothing that were is the came category. I forced us to come to a decision of which one would be donated and which one would stay. This made it easier to try and stay around my original goal of 4 pieces of each category of clothing.

The only other thing I can add to this, is if you have a lot of different hangers that you’ve collected for one reason or another. I suggest you go get the colored plastic hangers, they sell them at Walmart. They are very cheap and are worth the cost over using thin wire hangers.

Well, I hope this article gives you so insight on how to plan an attack on your closet. The weight this has lifted off my shoulders is nearly life changing. I can get to clothes quickly, and more importantly put clothes away even quicker!
